ten needs it badly. the band knows it, too. jeff has said so in interviews. waaaayyyyy too much reverb on that one. the remixes on rearviewmirror are far better than the album versions.

i was very sad to hear these "ruined" remix versions sans the reverb.

All that reverb may not be the vogue thing these days, but it was part of what made Ten the album it is.

I guess we are free to disagree, but i was personaly dissapointed that the band chose to "Un-Ten-ify" the songs from the very album that catapulted them to the position they have sense held in the American lexicon.

Sure, it isn't the way the band sounds now, but why go back and change history?

That sounds like something to do after they are not a band anymore..

We gotta save something for the aftermath , people! :D
  • Steve Hoffman remasters of the Pearl Jam catalog would be my wet dream come true.

Whats the point of remastering something thats already mastered?

    I submit evidence "A" and "B".

"A" is the remastered "Alive" from RVM...

"B" is the remastered "Black" from RVM...

    the defense rests

Wow, this is a crazy flashback for me: I worked at DCC with Steve Hoffman in the mid 80's... I was a lowly receptionist, he the awesome remastering man. I am also the recipient of several of his old vinyl albums and some vinyl "picture-discs" (Frampton Comes Alive! Boston!)... remember those? I wonder if he regrets getting rid of his vinyl stuff! Anyways it was really cool to read his name here and catch up on that wikpedia stuff, wow.

So the point is to remove atmospheric reverb and make the recording sound dull, lifeless, and contrived?

I love the albums the way they were recorded, hate to spread negativity but I'd really hate to listen any PJ album remastered in any shape or form.I can't see why anyone would want to hear Yield,No Code,Binaural or any of the others different from what they are.

I know i hear what the thread starter wants, but the question is does the band

  • Having Steve Hoffman remaster the entire catalog would be a great idea. I actually posted this in a similar thread a few months back.

I think each album should be re-released as a CD/DVD set. The DVD should contain DVD-Audio/DVD-Video of the entire album in 5.1 surround sound, music videos, documentaries, etc.

Elliot Scheiner should do the 5.1 mix. In my opinion, he's the best. Just check out the 5.1 mixes of the R.E.M. albums he did a few years back.

They should also give out a live cd with each album from its respective tour, and include ticket stubs, and a tour shirt. And like every 25 copies a guitatr pick.

    I absolutely agree!!!!

In my opinion Ten should NOT be un-Ten-ified. The mood...... the ambiance of TEN is as important as the song themselves, in my opinion. The very essence of an album should NEVER be destroyed....removed and ruined.

I just want to see someone remaster those original master analogue tapes, who can get the best out of them, be respectful to what the band intended and respect the overall ambiance of Ten.

I suppose it's possible a teeny-weeny minute trim of the reverb could help, without ruining the ambiance of the album. But certainly not what they did on that rearviewmirror (Greatest Hits 1991-2003) album. Ugh.

    :(

Ten was waaaaaaaay too heavy on the reverb. I will take the RVM re-mixes anyday over the album versions.

The first time I heard Black from RVM, my head had the line of "ahhh yes, this is how it is supposed to sound". It gave me chills.
  • I honestly am not in favor of this, but you do make a good Argument on why.. How would they make a song like hail hail better its is pretty fucking tight?

  • I just want all of the albums officially released in a surround sound format, and the mixes to be done by someone reputable (like Schiener).

why doesn't pj do this? then they could get the album to sound like they want, right?

In the latest Rolling Stone in an article titled: "NIN, Eagles, Pumpkins: Who Needs Labels?":

"...Wal-Mart has since inked similar deals with Journey and Bryan Adams. "When you have established groups, you don't need all the things that a record company would offer: marketing, press, art departments," says Journey manager John Baruck, who works for Eagles manager Irving Azoff. "You just need to get a record out there." Baruck says the band's royalty from Wal-Mart is about four times more than it would get with a typical record deal."

same article says pj hires one label per album?
why? when they could do it themselves and their music wouldn't sound so shitty when cranked in the car.

Ok, so I sent the link of this to Steve, here's his quote:

    "Pattie,

Wow, Pearl Jam. That would be neat stuff to work on."

Thanks people for mentioning him here, it made me look him up and contact him for the first time since 1988.

From a financial perspective, I can't imagine that this would be a bad idea. Sure, there would be some PJ fans who would not prefer the new versions... but I'd bet any current PJ fans would be likely to buy this. People who missed the boat on past PJ albums would also have a great chance to pick them up and I'm sure there'd be some decent press generated.

Fuck Steve Hoffman. His forum is a massive shithole. Recently it was revealed that Hoffman has been lying about which tapes he's used on past releases. He invited the MFSL staff to post on his website, and when they came and innocently posted that they found better tapes for their Roy Orbison disc, they were banned from the forum immediately, and anyone who mentions it is immediately banned as well. That's right, he BANNED the MFSL staff from his website! Some of the moderators and regular posters on his board (SHTV) are total fucking idiots. They edit threads and posts constantly...it's probably the most insanely moderated forum on the internet. If you even slightly disagree with one of the moderators, you're immediately banned. Sometimes when they ban people they offer them "pennace" to be re-admitted. (ie. you must write a personal apology, in the form of an essay, to the moderators!) That place is worse than Nazi Germany.

Perhaps the most despicable thing Hoffman has done, was to sell CDR's of unreleased DCC titles for thousands of dollars a pop, in order to keep his website afloat! Of course, when people started catching on, all reference to it was removed from his forum, and anyone who mentions it is, you guessed it, is banned immediately.

Crazy or not, Steve Hoffman does some great work. He'd be great for Pearl Jam, Nirvana, or any other band that I like.
