I blasted Avocado in my car this weekend. It sounded like crap.
    It’s a shame bands don’t get a say so. It’s their music!

Having Steve Hoffman remaster the entire catalog would be a great idea. I actually posted this in a similar thread a few months back.

I think each album should be re-released as a CD/DVD set. The DVD should contain DVD-Audio/DVD-Video of the entire album in 5.1 surround sound, music videos, documentaries, etc.

Elliot Scheiner should do the 5.1 mix. In my opinion, he's the best. Just check out the 5.1 mixes of the R.E.M. albums he did a few years back.

    I'm with you my brother!!!

I have those R.E.M DVD-Audio discs and I love the hell out of the sound!!!!

Please hire Mr. Hoffman!!! Please? :)

Yeah, I hate when they brickwall the sound. Pisses me off to no end.

It ruins all the dynamics and emotional build up of a song. Especially to songs that start off with delicate instrumentation, lower instrument pieces and builds up to a cresendo. I also believe it ruins the delicate timbre and nuances of a song; as well as ruining the overall atmosphere/mood/ambiance of a recording.

    God, I hate brickwalling!!!!

This is truly an inspired Idea and something I have been secretly hoping to happen for a long time. I am a great fan of Mr.Hoffmans work and there is nobody better to tackle such a project. The great thing about his work is that he is incredibly respectful and true to the art created by artist. He never unnecessarily adds or takes away anything from the masters just for the sake of doing so and you will never get loudness, compression or brickwalling from anything his hands touch.

I would love to have Mr. Hoffman re-issue the entire catalog on lp. Trust me if this was to happen these would be the definitive pearl jam lps period!

His work on the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS "Stadium Arcadium" and The White Stripes "Icky Thump" Lp releases compared to their CD counterparts is all evidence you need as to what Mr. Hoffman brings to the table. Not to mention literally hundreds and hundreds of other examples.

A big thumbs up to the OP and while it might be a pipe dream I'll keep smoking and dreaming.

ten needs it badly. the band knows it, too. jeff has said so in interviews. waaaayyyyy too much reverb on that one. the remixes on rearviewmirror are far better than the album versions.

i was very sad to hear these "ruined" remix versions sans the reverb.

All that reverb may not be the vogue thing these days, but it was part of what made Ten the album it is.

I guess we are free to disagree, but i was personaly dissapointed that the band chose to "Un-Ten-ify" the songs from the very album that catapulted them to the position they have sense held in the American lexicon.

Sure, it isn't the way the band sounds now, but why go back and change history?

Whats the point of remastering something thats already mastered?

    I submit evidence "A" and "B".

"A" is the remastered "Alive" from RVM...

"B" is the remastered "Black" from RVM...

    the defense rests

Wow, this is a crazy flashback for me: I worked at DCC with Steve Hoffman in the mid 80's... I was a lowly receptionist, he the awesome remastering man. I am also the recipient of several of his old vinyl albums and some vinyl "picture-discs" (Frampton Comes Alive! Boston!)... remember those? I wonder if he regrets getting rid of his vinyl stuff! Anyways it was really cool to read his name here and catch up on that wikpedia stuff, wow.

So the point is to remove atmospheric reverb and make the recording sound dull, lifeless, and contrived?
