Go check out The GZA (The Genius), particularly his album Liquid Swords! That guy is no idiot. Awesome wordplay and delivery all the time. There are thousands of people who rap and can express it intelligently in rhyme or in normal conversation. If you hate the artform, that's one thing-- but you don't think everyone who raps is an idiot, do you?

well if you go around and call yourself The GZA (the Genius) then yes i think you are an idiot just for that reason. but hey don't mind me i think at least 80% of the people in the world are idiots for one reason or another. :D and i never said i hated the art form. i think it takes a real talent to write and perform it even if i don't listen to it. i respect how hard it is. i don't think anyone could do it.

And the Boss wrote songs about serial killers, some sympathetic. Idk why people are much more critical of rap lyrics than others.

It can lack a certain subtlety. Rap or hip hop is so much more in your face.

My guess is most of us would agree this is not about rap- it is about an artist who made a bad choice.
    That's putting it very nicely.

I'm against war. In fact, I'm totally against war. But I'm not against our troops. I have family member who did three tours in Iraq. I don't support what went on over there but I totally support our troops.

Soulja Boy's choice of words was not a spur of the moment decision. At one time or another, we've all said something in which we didn't quite mean the way it came out. This is not the case here. Soulja Boy had an opportunity to make a statement againt war and instead made a statement againt people. My not-so-nice thoughts about that? F**k that.

  • I will not buy a Soulja Boy cd or listen to his music...

Of course that was my position before I even saw this thread.

And how stupid is it that a guy who calls himself Soulja Boy, is apparently anti soldier.

And how stupid is it that a guy who calls himself Soulja Boy, is apparently anti soldier.

yes that thought occurred to me. then i found this in the urban dictionary:

    Soulja or Souljah
Not to be (stereotypically)confused with Jesus freaks or aimless gang members, A Soulja, is anyone who has gone through hard times and fought against adversity. A Soulja's strength comes from within, strength of mind, body, soul, and character. A true Soulja would have learned from his/her mistakes, taken responsibility for his/her actions and gained strength to never back down. Someone who knows no limits to his/her own power and God given abilities. A person who serves their people, lives by a strict code, and is never afraid to stand up for what they believe in. Someone who is willing to fight for their home, family, property, etc, but is not necessarily part of a conventional service (Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, etc).
A Soulja cannot be defined by race, age, background, location, or economic status.

    and this:

Usually a man who grew up on the streets. Slang for "soldier" like in the army. Battles in combats knows how to use a gun to kill. Their ghetto being their "turf" or warzone.

    and this:

A term that used to deem some respect before it was coined by a sellout and made into a dance.

Given that, imagine how much more support this artist would have gotten had he chosen his words more carefully. Could this have been a very big missed opportunity?

because it's way more prevalent in rap music/lyrics. even the example used in this thread (GZA, the Genius) i listened to about the 1st 30 seconds and turned it off because heard the N-word at least 2 or 3 times (at work so started it low then kind of had to turn that off).

Our society is so full of a false sense of "outrage". Items like these are stories, not because people care, but simply because it's a way to scold others - no matter how good or bad the comments are. Who cares what a some random person says or thinks.. it has zero meaning... but talking bout it or bringing more light to it, only gives it value. And in all seriousness, if you look to musicians, politicians, sports stars or any other "famous" person for morality and similar, perhaps you should figure things out on your own and aren't exactly the beacon of intelligence yourself.

Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a law-breaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. - Louis Brandeis

I agree with you here in a big way, FiveB247x. I think when even just posting to a public site like this each of us should think out our thoughts and words carefully and so a famous person should take extra care in being responsible to do the same. Yet we really should think for ourselves and beyond that be active in doing things that make a difference. Famous people should not be our conscience.

I think the most insulting thing in this thread is to call 'Soulja Boy' a rapper.:lol:

He's an urban commercial pop-music artist who can't rap for shit.
