PJ20 Setlist Appreciation Thread

I know there have been some complaints about the setlist and some songs that were not played. I, for one, thought the setlists (I was at the Saturday show and listened to the Sunday show) were great. Sure, I didn't get to hear my favorite PJ song (Sad), but it didn't decrease my love for the show even a little. They put together a varied setlist that covered their entire career, and I loved the 4 songs that Cornell came out and sang.

What song did you get to hear that was a pleasant surprise? For me, besides the Cornell songs, it was probably "In the Moonlight" with Homme. They sounded great together on that one.

  • In The Moonlight is stupendous, but as a Riot Act fan I was pleasantly surprised to see Help Help resurface and LBC's mysterious hiatus from setlists end. I am also a big Habit fan and was wondering if Philly would be our last for a while.

I thought it was awesome. My only complaint was too many "faves" on night two. They should have taken the entire list of songs and redistributed them better (taking, say, Daughter and Black to night one). But having been there both days...Awesome overall. Anyone upset with it should just stop going to concerts because they're hard to please.

  • ^^^Eddie kind of forced him into it, to be honest. I would say Stone was really pissed. If he had flat out refused to play it, you would have had 30K people thinking he was being a huge dick. I would love to know why Stone doesn't like to play the song.

Yes that was quite the uncomfortable experience. I bet Stone told him backstage that it was definitely not happening and Ed just really wanted to give it to the crowd. There was probably a conversation about this later in the night lol.

OMG, are they gonna break up?!?

Seriously, I don't think Stone was pissed. He didn't even look pissed.

Back to the setlist apprecitation ... I have no complaints. Zero. I knew I wouldn't. Sure, there were several of my favorites not played, but when you have 50 favorites, you go in knowing you're going to miss a couple. There were a lot of rare surprises I'd never heard before (like a dozen, and I'm approaching 20 shows), plus just enough standards to satisfy everyone.

I actually kind of preferred the standards at an event like this. My favorite moments were the crowd screaming hello during Small Town, or hopping in unison and belting out Given to Fly, or supplying the "doo doo doos" to Black acapella, long after the music had stopped.

Honorable mention goes to 37,000 people screaming "Satan's dick!!!!!!" which really is kind of funny if you stop to think about it.

In a large measure, PJ20 was a celebration of us -- the fans -- as much as it was the band. You really felt that connection on the communal sing-a-long songs. Just spine-tingling.

    I appreciate this thread :D

There were so many highlights for me, I can't even get it together right now, ha! I absolutely loved both nights...In the Moonlight, Help Help, Habit, NO WAY, Red Mosquito, MOTHER FRICKIN LOVE BONE. I totally loved the TOTD songs too, Reach Down (coulda been played only one night maybe) has a killer guitar riff and I was stoked to finally see Mike McCready shred on it. Loved seeing him do laps during Spin the Black Circle, ha! They really looked like they were having a great time up there, and that was great to see. And Wash opener for Sunday?? Just wow all around!

  • I had been to 11 shows coming into PJ20 and the fact that I was able to hear 14 songs (20 if you add in Temple of the Dog) that I had never seen live was wonderful.

First's: Arms Aloft, In My Tree, Push Me, Pull Me, Setting Forth, In the Moonlight, Breath, Education, Kick Out the Jams, Wash, Leatherman, Red Mosquito, The New World, Improv(New Song), Nothingman, No Way, Stardog Champion, Say Hello to Heaven, Reach Down, Hunger Strike, Call Me a Dog, and All Night Thing

    Highlights:
Daughter/ It's Ok: It has always meant something really special to me since I saw it on 08/03/2000 in Virginia Beach, to hear it played in such a different circumstance and in celebration was just amazing.
No Way, Red Mosquito, Nothingman: I really love all 3 of these songs and have been waiting to see them live
Temple of the Dog: It is something I have always wanted to see and thought it was amazing (Though on night 2 I wish they would have swapped Reach Down for Wooden Jesus)
Jeremy and Black: The crowd participation on both of these was just something to behold, Jeremy was about as loud as I have ever heard the crowd, and then the fact Ed had to stop us from singing on Black after the band had finished playing was special.

I really feel privileged to have been a part of it and can't wait till I can see them again, whenever that might be.

The end of Black was magic, but I thought it was pretty kickass that a pretty big portion of the crowd started the dododoot do dododo during the solo right on cue.

Hell yes, this is what I've been looking for!!!

I loved the setlists both nights. Probably about ten or eleven songs into Night 1 I was thinking, "My god, I'm going to get this setlist tattooed!" And I might ;)

There were probably three songs total from both nights that I don't typically care for, but I could rock out to them all the same because of the circumstance.

Highlights for me: Release, In My Tree, Faithfull, Who You Are, Push Me Pull Me (Push Me Pull Me!!!!!), Deep, Breath, Education, the Save It For Later tag (love it).

Night 2: Wash, Severed Hand, Given To Fly, Pilate (what fun that chorus was!), Love Boat Captain, It's OK (lord have mercy, that made my weekend right there), Red Mosquito, Satan's Bed (!!!), Black (that we wouldn't stop singing, and Ed to had to start clapping to make us give it up!), No Way, Spin the Black Circle.

    Just dynamite.
  • i honestly cannot beleive all of the hate for these sets. I've read a lot of the threads hating on what they played. For the most part were they from people who actually attended the shows?

i for one, thought both nights were great. I loved the temple of the dog reunion each night. When will we ever get that again, prolly not for a long time. it seems like a lot of people have been asking for that for years, and once we got it people bitch! This is a big reason why i dont like to come on the boards anymore

    highlights for me:

    setting forth
    in the moonlight
    education
    daughter with its ok tag
    wash
    push me pull me
    deep
    help help
temple of the dog (yes EVERYTHING they played!)
    kick out the jams
    severed hand
    pilate
    love boat captain
    leatherman
    satan's bed
    no way
    sonic reducer

i cannot wait for the bootlegs
it's largely due to eddie that i liked to jump off of things as a child...
  • Yes! I appreciate the setlist...its very hard to rate a show using just the setlist...its the entire experience/vibe/improvisations...the whole 9.

Don't worry about those who are expressing their dislike for the setlist(s). Think about the law of percentages: if you have 30,000 people attending an event like this, the percentages are that 5% or so won't enjoy it. That's a very small number relative tot he whole. Besides, you can't please everyone; it is simply impossible.

There are some people who don't like Empire Strikes Back. Go figure.
  • I really was amazed by how well they pulled off the task of 20 years into 2 nights. Red Mosquito, Smile, EV new song, Black circle, The fixer...Really I could just copy and paste the set list. I don't know why and I have NO complaints what so ever but I was really glad to be in the seats on the first night. Even if they played most of my favorite songs on the second night. Great show can't wait for the bootlegs!
I've tasted a life wasted I ain't ever going back

These shows were the best one, two combo I'ver been two (22 under the belt). Night two was one of my favorites of all time.

Anybody else catch Ed's Black tag? I knew it rang a bell, but then yesterday I couldn't remember it. Turns out it was Poor Girl. I remember someone requesting this around here and it's nice Ed gave it a little shout out.
  • I think Stone didnt want to play No Way because he knew they were tight on time and wanted to play Crown of Thorns
