Sorry but I thought opening night of PJ20 was kind of boring and anticlimactic. This is the first time I have ever left a PJ show unfulfilled.

I'm more pissed about everything running out at the merch booths: hats, hoodies, posters... I really enjoyed 'say hello to heaven' and 'love reign'. I got the feeling that PJ20 is more of a celebration of the artists that helped PJ become and grow into who they are as a band.

The pouring rain for most of the day probably put a damper on the mood. Sorry you didn't enjoy yourself.
The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

I will take your view over someone sat on the boards saying 'glad i didn't go after seeing the setlist'.

For me, the setlist looks great - my kind of PJ gig. Lots of curveballs thrown in, the big-hitters not there. I'd die happy seeing 'Help Help', 'In My Tree', 'Who You Are' and 'Hunger Strike' in the same show. Any show!

What disappointed you? How did the band sound generally?

Hopefully you will enjoy Night 2 more!

Sorry to hear that. I thought it was fantastic. I wasn't expecting it to be epic, just pure awesomeness and indeed it was. Can't wait for tomorrow.

It was different enough that there was less Evenflows and no Yellow Ledbetter, and the random help from other artists was a nice change of pace. It did kinda end abruptly, but we all know there's a whole second day to enjoy without rain

I do admit having Cornell sing 3-4 songs messed up the flow though, even though it was great to hear hunger strike.
  • Thought the show was great...tons of energy and Cornell was amazing...couldn't have asked for a better opening night...

The Bach just before they came out was beautiful and Peter Gabriel's cover of Arcade Fire's "My Body is a Cage" as the house lights went up was a really inspired choice. Other than that... uh, weird.

I am fully aware that expectations were humongous for this show and how that colors our assessments. That said, tonight was a huge disappointment. I'm still sorting through emotions about it all, but it was just a weird, uncomfortable show. There were definite highlights, and my specific problems are neither with the deep cuts/rarities or excessive use of guests. There were just all kinds of things that made this less satisfying than any other Pearl Jam show I've seen. I don't even know if I saw Pearl Jam tonight, seriously. They seemed very tight, maybe nervous? Low energy (except Mike), and also didn't seem to be having much band/group chemistry. Honestly, it was so weird about 45 minutes into the set I started worrying there was gonna be a break-up announcement at end of weekend and that's why it was so awkward.

Then there was Mr. Vedder, basically my favorite person in the world. NOT HIMSELF TONIGHT. Shy, serious, not talkative, not jumping around much. Totally weird. He did not say one funny thing all night! And no stories! It was insane! Also, his voice was in terrible shape. I feel so bad saying that and so bad for the band and fans and all, but it was just brutal. There were some problems throughout with the mic or sound mix or whatever but his voice was strained and hoarse. For many of the songs he just let us sing, it was sad to watch.

As for the setlist, there's some real beautiful stuff in there and I appreciate a Help, Help in place of Jeremy or whatever else. There was also some pure dumbness. I mean 20 yrs in the making, biggest, most intense gathering of fans in the history of the band and after opening with a rendition of Release that shook me to my core, you follow it up with Arms-fucking-Aloft??? WHAT?? I mean decent, but really?? Terrible choice and it sucked the magical energy out of the place coming off Release. As for the guests, other than Cornell, no one improved any song or was compelling as a performer. It just seemed like favors to those artists. Which is fine... when they open for you on some random tour. This weekend should be about celebrating pure Pearl Jam music, the stuff we all love, the stuff that kills live, the stuff the band has loved to play past 20 years...

I can't go on, this is too painful. I mean there was some booing in the pavillion when they walked off for final time. I couldn't believe it. I was telling the guy next to me they have at least another hour of work to do. I mean fine, don't play the standard singles... But at least develop some rhythm in the set! It was stilted and weird. No flow, no logic. And the weird sudden ending on a cover with Mudhoney.

I don't know, I don't know. I will be there again tomorrow, devoted and hopeful.

    Ed wasn't talkative?!?

He talked for what seemed like 15 minutes about growing up and people telling him he'd never amount to anything, and he should give up on this whole music dream, and take a job at the drugstore and yada yada. It was pretty fucking inspiring. Then, after the final song, he's the last guy on the stage STILL talking.

The guy basically wouldn't shut up all night.

Anyway, I liked the show. It was a little weird, but weird can be good. I really don't know what else to say. I'm stunned people thought it was "low-energy" or whatever. I also think Ed sounded fine, and often great. It's like we were watching two different shows.

Also, are people really bitching about length? I went in thinking I'd be happy if they played until midnight, since the show was slated to end at 11:30. They went to 12:15. Nearly 2:45 of showtime.

I heard they ended early because of the curfew and they had already gone over the curfew. Is this true? It does seem abit abrupt to end with Kick Out The Jams

They played for 2:45. Not sure how much longer one expected them to play.

Most of us figured the show was over with Porch.

This is 1.45 though, right? Or did you mean 10.30 instead of 11.30?

Ps: I wasn't there, so this question is purely out of curiousity and interest.

I can't wait to hear & watch it too. Though, the Temple Of The Dog experience during Pearl Jam setlist, this was the greatest "original Pearl Jam song's played" setlist in year's?

    so much anticipation ....

after living through 30 years of marriage
I also know anniversaries, in and of themselves, can be a let down ;)

it's the everyday and each day that makes it all real
    makes it what it is

hold on to all the good PJ memories
bundle them together and put PJ 20 wherever it belongs for you

it's all good and there is nothing better than Pearl Jam :D

I wish I could have seen the CC set. That's the the only thing so far that is making me wish I went. Seemed like a sold show, but still doesn't top Philly III and IV.
  • The concert started closer to 10pm...I remember looking down at my cell and it was around 9:50pm and pj wasn't out yet......The show was a little over 2hrs long..
