So Who Was There Live for the Atlanta 94 Show

edited October 2008 in The Porch
This may have been the greatest concert of all time and I don't think in all my time on this board I've seen anyone write that they were there. I'd love to hear stories about being at the greatest concert ever (IMHO as well as many other's opinion).

I'd agree it was one of the greatest shows ever, but of course, I'm biased since I was there... sort of - while I was there "live for the Atlanta 94 show" I assume you are refering to the April 3 show that was broadcast on the radio, and yes, that was a great one, but what really took my love for this band over the top was what happened the night before - the first of two shows at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta.

You can see my screen name comes from that night... the first time I heard my favorite song, Porch, live, on 4-2-94.

So, even though you probably meant the next night, this show stands out for me as what started it all - you want a review that's over 14 years overdue?

It all started with getting the tickets... As a junior in high school, Pearl Jam was at the height of their popularity and trying to prevent scalpers from getting tickets did not announce the exact time the tickets were going on sale until they went on sale. I had my mom and grandmother glued to the radio to hear the announcement & run out & get tickets. I got some inside information that it was going to be Friday "after school." Last period was math class & my friends knew what was going on, so pushed me out the classroom door and I ran to the car. On the way over to the Ticket outlet, I heard on the radio 'Pearl Jam tickets are on sale now.' Stopped at a red light, I nearly got out and ran across traffic, but it turned green and I pulled into the store - it was inside Marshall's so ran the back of the store to get in line and they are counting off 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (stopping at the person before me) "and that's it Pearl Jam is sold out." Dejected I waited to see if anything would happen and then, they said, ok, there's one more single. Do you want it? My first thought, 'My mom won't let me go alone,' but I took it. Bought it, ecstatic and walked away & looked it... then, shock. Is it really? Could it be? That ticket read ORCH, Row A. Was it really front row???
Meanwhile, my mom pulls through too - hearing the announcement, she went the closest ticket outlet to her and got a couple more tickets so I would be allowed to go.
We arrive on that now fateful night, April 2, 1994 to find that yes, other than a few rows of folding chairs in front of me, I am on the front row for my first
    Pearl Jam concert.
Lights out. Candles lit at the fox and the first notes of Release...
WOW. An unbelievable concert had started. :

set: Release, Go, Animal, Dissident, Even Flow, Why Go, Deep, Jeremy, Glorified G, Daughter/(It's Better to Not be Sane improv)/(WMA), Blood, Footsteps, Once, Alive, Black, State of Love and Trust, Leash
enc 1: The Kids are Alright, Rearviewmirror, Not for You, Elderly Woman, Out of My Mind, Alone, Porch
    enc 2: Indifference

Ok, I have notes for this, but there actually still on my wall in my old room at my parent's house, so I'll spare the details since my ticket summary was way too long, but what an amazing show! The energy, the fast pace of the songs, the intensity of the performance - truly, amazing. Since, then I've been to 20 more, but there's nothing like the first.
  • I remember it well. I stayed up and taped it off the radio. That was the most kick ass two tapes ever. I must have listened to them a thousand times. WMA was the shit.

It was my first show. I was a Jr in college and living in Georgia. At the time it was before I used the internet, had PJ friend or connections, or was a aware of day of show tickets. Therefore it seemed impossible to get a ticket to this show. My college buddy from Atlanta had worked for the Braves for many years and wound up getting us tickets though a Braves player (Klesko or Lemke) cant remember which. 67 shows later it remains at the top for me.
baby boomers selling you rumors of their history, forcing youth away from the truth of what's real today.

Pri vate Ra Di O. I listened last night with the those weird soundbytes in between encores with the ping pong balls and basketball dribbling soundeffects for the radio listeners. This was when radio was really fun. Maybe Sirius can re-broadcast this Atlanta Concert in April of 2009 for the 15 year anniversary?

The band was ferocious in '94.
That whole tour had amazing energy.
I caught 2 shows, the first in Springfield MA, the second at the Paramount theater in NYC, after which 10C sent me a copy of the Fox theater shows on CD. (My first bootleg..lol)

I got a copy of the boot from a friend who had connections at WBCN in Boston. Still listen to it. It's bright red. I really wish either satellite or FM radio would re-broadcast it next April. That would be so cool. Not sure why PJ doesn't do anymore radio specials.

  • I remember staying up to listen to this on the BBC in England - my mum let a mate of mine stay over as well and we were listening to it dead quite cos they were alseep.

I had it recorded on cassette tapes that I treasured for years, must have spent hours winding it back in over the years I'm amazed I managed to look after it for so long.

Was always my favorite ever version of Black.

Got the CD's off ebay now.

So many classics on that show. How about "This is a new song that's dedicated to the bastard that married my momma." And Betterman found it's mass audience.

I remember listening to that live in my car radio, don't remember if it was a Philly or New York station. However that was amazing to listen to then, it's amazing to listen to now. It doesn't get better than that.

"well, fuck it, I guess we are still on the radio." Crowd roars. "And of course, there's me. I'm up to 250 pounds. Black Francis' got nothing on me." Who the hell is Black Francis anyway, or whatever he said?

  • I was there also, but i think being on the stage while they played t.o.t.d. the last day at lolla is top of the list hanging out with the whole band & talking to susan & chris after the show was priceless.this atl show is a close second
  • I was 16. My first "real" concert. First time I drove to Atlanta from the suburbs w/o my parents. Best band at their peak in the best venue in Atlanta. It was all downhill after that.

Porch, that is unbelievable. Front row!!!?? Did you go the next night? How was tailgating? How was the sound in the theatre?

Sound was awesome. That's a great venue for a show. Since I'd never heard Kings X (the opener), I just remember how loud they were, but when PJ went on, the sound was perfect. Very loud, but still clear. The energy was amazing!

There was this little, probably two foot high wall between the front row of the theather seats and the platform where the folding charis were. At the first notes of State of Love & Trust, I jumped up & pushed off that wall, so was pretty high. I feel like Ed saw since he sang the first part of the song looking right at us.

Wanted to go the next night, but scaplers were too high, so had a radio listening party instead.

I would LOVE to see a video of these two nights, but haven't seen one.

That is awesome. I've checked Youtube for videos but haven't seen one. There has to be a video tape somewhere since there was so much emphasis with it being a live national radio special. I just can't believe there is no video. But what a show to attend, huh. You lucky bastard. I'd trade my Hartford 08 experience with being at this show. Correct on the tshirt.
