Yeah and fuck the environment. What did the environment ever do for me? Never bought me a car- nope. Never gave me the joy of a jet ski. Nope. Never gave me a new strip mall to spend my dollars on trinkets. Nope. Fuck the environment.

Did you read the links I posted? Obviously not. :? I said nothing about guidelines or standards. I was only giving an example of how the EPA is responsible for the deaths of millions of people due to junk science. You need to wake up my friend.

If you do some research, you can find just as many articles on the internet that say the opposite of this. (I won't waste space posting them- they're easy to find.) The old and easy answer to our problems has been "If it's a problem, dump chemicals on it." Bringing back dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane will do nothing but kill more birds and further degrade the environment. One of the articles you posted basically calls Rachel Carson a liar. That in of itself should tell you where they're coming from. Chemicals for a better world? I think not.

The other obvious thing I forget to mention- have any of these "scientists" who want to reintroduce DDT given thought to the fact that malaria is spreading as global temperatures increase? Climate change will affect many lives in the future- the solution for which will not be found in spreading more chemicals around. Any solid education in ecology, biological organization, and the complex nature of ecosystems will reveal the obvious fact that introducing non-naturally occuring chemicals distrupts the delicate balances in ecosystems. It is these anthropogenically induced imbalances in natural systems that is causing the systematic problems we are increassingly encountering in the first place.

I'm not saying the EPA is doing the best job it could to find solutions to these problems, but weakening it is not the solution. It would make more sense to strengthen the EPA and elect officials who will be more inclined to appoint qualified people to positions within that organization who understand the way in which complex ecosystems work- not people who are paid off by corporate powers that see things in short-sighted, profit driven terms.

So where the fuck are the jobs then? The nation should adopt the standards the california has. Period. I live in Ohio. I have seen smog alerts multiple times this year. Why is that? Was there smog before coal and then oil were used as they are today?

Not too over-simplify the matter (athough if a simple solution works, I say go with it) but the jobs would be there if more people were put to to work developing and implementing clean energy. That would not only reduce unemployment but smog as well and Ohioans and everyone else would begain to enjoy cleaner air. Obama dropped the ball on this one big time. How's that song go-- "The whole world, It's a world-wide suicide."

P.S. As a Californian I should be proud that you mention our smog standards but even here it's not all good news. I live in El Dorado County and ours and nearby Sacramento County have too many bad air days to call this the best standard to go by.

I'm not sure but I believe that there was smog (air polution) before coal and oil and I think it was caused by volcanos and some other natural things like lightning fires but that would take some homework on part and I'm enjoying the weekend right now.

Probably, although I couldn't find any statistics saying so. I did find a web site where a number of people brag about how relaxed or non-existant their smog laws are:

Gotta wonder what these guys are thinking. :?

Then you'd have to trust them scientists to tell you that. I don't believe them at all.

but you're right. before fossil fuels and 6 billion people on earth spewing billions and billions of pollutants into the atmosphere, it was most likely just as bad back in the day.....

Yes, Godfather, volcanos and lighting strike fires did cause air pollution before the indultrial age began and still do today. There's obviously nothing we can do about that. Anthropogenically caused air pollution is another matter. Air pollution-natural or otherwise- is unhealthy. We have increased air pollution both directly and indirectly. For example, our recent hundred years of fervent efforts to suppress forest fires have increased air pollution because we have allowed undergrowth to grow unnaturally dense so that when lightning or human ignited fires are set off in our forests the fires burn larger and longer. Left to nature, lightening induced small fires would have kept the "fire ladder" low and the large fires we see today would be much more scarce.

Other human cause sources of air polution of course include internal combustion engines and industry. We are approaching the one billion mark in autos and trucks running world-wide. These, coupled with industial pollution have increased the invisible CO2 in our atmosphere to levels that will soon cause irreversable climate change.

Human caused pollution is something we can do something about. To not do so would seem to me, literally insane.

 That struck me as funny at first... then I found this:

"According to a new report issued by government regulators in California, dairies are the No. 1 source of smog-producing pollution in the San Joaquin Valley, producing more than even cars and light trucks"

    http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/08/ ... 3257.shtml

(Remembering of course that large herds of cows- or worse- huge numbers of those poor beasts penned in close quarters- is a result of human activity.)
