Smoke-free campuses

"The University of Kentucky is one of more than 500 college campuses across the country that have enacted 100% smoke-free or tobacco-free policies as of July 1. Although policy enforcement varies from school to school, most prohibit smoking on all campus grounds, including athletic stadiums, restaurants and parking lots.

An increasing number of colleges adopted smoke-free or tobacco-free policies in the past few years, according to American Nonsmokers' Rights Foundation Project Manager Liz Williams. In the past year alone, 120 campuses were added to the smoke-free list."

I like the idea but there should be smoke areas for rights of smokers also, these smoke areas should be away from foot traffic areas so that the smoke dose not bother passer byers...hay fair is fair

I would love to say that I disagree with the rules and blah blah blah, but in this case, the business or institution enacting the policy should be free to do so without restriction as long as someone's constitutionally guaranteed rights are not being violated...Smoking isn't a right, it is a decision. if you choose to smoke you have to play by the rules

The university I went to is now smoke free .... a little more then a decade ago you could smoke in the dorms.

In case anyone wonders why the N.R.A. fights the slightest hint of gun regulations with great zeal is because they have seen the damage inflicted by the Smoke-Nazis on the tobacco industry.

I'm not a smoker, and I think this is fucking stupid. If you want to smoke outside, that's perfectly cool with me.

I agree... I hate smoking... I hate the smell of it, I hate the smell of people who smoke, and I hate people who careless throw cigarette butts on the ground...

But this is stupid... I get what hospitals do where you can't smoke right outside the doors (who wants to walk through a smoke curtain exiting a building), but in the middle of parking lot, or outside on the campus lawn, who really cares? Who is being affected by this?

In BC we have a no-smoking law that prohibits you from smoking within 3 metres of a doorway, window or air duct. ...Though some people don't follow that :x

I don't see the need to ban it 100% on campus. As a non-smoker it obviously wouldn't bother me...
...I would feel bad for the people who need cigs as a stress reliever... Exam time would be pretty shitty!

I don't smoke, and smoke / smokers really don't bother me, so I'm not a huge fan of this concept, but I don't think it's a horrible idea overall. Smokers really need to do their research when applying to schools if so many have adopted this type of policy. There certainly could be some economic backlash for a lot of these schools by doing this. It'll be interesting to see how this shakes out-- if more schools will come aboard with these ideas, or will they start to lose business and either begin to ignore these anti-smoking policies or reverse them?

On the bright side us non-smokers wouldn't have to have any conversations with people who smell like an ashtray. Nothing better than talking to someone first thing in the mornin who's breath is radiating out the smell of tobacco

first off, i don't know how this will be enforced. secondly, i don't like the idea that they are banning a legal substance in a school or anywhere. I wonder if the school would ban drinking in schools also.

The smoking issue can get tricky. We had a guy come in the book store yesterday who obviously was a cigar smoker- he smelled like a walking lit cigar even though he was not smoking at the time. He walked though the store and within a few minutes, the whole place reeked of cigar. The few customers we had were visibly uncomfortable. One began coughing. Another look like he wanted to barf on the guys shoes. I think I was turning a little green myself. So what do you do? And don't get me wrong- I'm not hard core anti-smoking. I smoked cigarettes for 20 years before quiting for good.

This heavy-handed response is the very sort of thing that always ends up getting on somebody's nerves. I'm not a smoker, but I find that the edict issued by the University of Kentucky goes too far. While smoking certainly bothers many (including myself), not allowing smoking in outdoor areas like a parking lot seems ridiculous. No smoking in indoors; waste facilities at exits and around campus for smoking outside. Done.
