My oldest nephew is joining the Navy

He's done 2 yrs of collage and feels he is just wasting money. He wants to try something different and challenge himself. He's excited and looking forward to training and being shipped out after the first of the year. He told myself and the rest of the family this past weekend. I'm ok with it but alittle nervous and I know my mom and sister are too. But he has to do what is best for him. I shook his hand and congratulated him. I know his great grandfather would be proud also.

I don't know what MEPS is. But I just heard today that he scored very high on the test you take. And because he has 2 yrs of collage under his belt he can start out in a better spot and get paid more. So far so good.
also he'll find out when he leaves for boot camp after he chooses a job
I'm worried but very proud of my godson.
100 men go down, 50 couples come up :P
i kid, i kid that's actually not a bad job, he'll have plenty of options if he decides not to make the navy a career
Submarines. Yikes. I guess he isn't claustrophobic!
Awwww man that was wrong to say but funny.
He's excited and happy to be doing this. It's 5 yrs active duty and then 3 yrs reserves.
as for the joke, it's an old one and i'm sure your nephew will hear a million times while he's in
No worries about the joke.
Almost 5 yrs in did you see any action?
scares me quite a bit
but i am very proud of him for following his heart nonetheless
totally get where you're coming from
best to your nephew and mine, and all the other young men out there doing what they think is best

it's the only connection he'll have to the outside world and letters from home will make it easier for him.
I joined the Navy in 2000 and served 4 years. Believe me, he is probably feeling the same thing in Great Lakes right now. When I got there it was a whirlwind. You don't have time to stop and think of anything the first 48-72 hours. But then I fell into a routine, met some great people, and it was over before I knew it. It will definately be harder for you and your sister. I probably don't have to even say it, but WRITE LETTERS!!!! Lots of them and as often as you can. There is nothing more uplifting, for me at least, than recieving mail while your away from home. There is no TV, radio, or internet at boot camp so keep him informed of what's going on. Letters will be like gold to him believe me.

He gets picked up today at noon and off he goes.
From what I hear yes he will be.
Sad and I wish him well and I applaud what he's doing.
We took him out to lunch and 4 people came up to him and shook his hand and thanked him. My sister almost lost it each time. thanks btw.
Enjoy your time with him

Ahhh we sure did but these 2 weeks flew by so fast. :(
Tonight his flight leaves and will see him in mid May for another week or so. By then he will know if he will be going to Hawaii or Seattle after that.
Last nite with a few family and friends we had another toast and wished him well.
