myFOXdetroit.com - Fox 2 News has confirmed that longtime Detoit Lions beat writer Tom "Killer" Kowalski died Monday morning at the age of 51.

Sports Director Dan Miller learned that Kowalski was found unresponsive in his home by his fiance Diane Wolan. He was taken to DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital in Commerce Township in Oakland County, where he was pronounced dead.

This is sad news for many staffers at Fox 2, who knew Tom personally. Our deep felt condolences go out to his fiance, friends and family.

Tom appeared regularly on Fox 2's Sunday NFL Pregame Show, the Sportsworks Round Table and co-hosted the web chat Monday Morning Quarterback with Jamie Samuelsen.

Tom was a Lions beat writer for Booth Communications and had a large number of readers online due to his published works on the web site Mlive.com

"Tom has a huge following across the state of Michigan and beyond" says Bill Emkow, Editor-in-Chief of Mlive.com. "He embraced the notion of online publishing more than 10 years ago, well ahead of his counterparts. His work helped to create the writing style of today's online journalism. He made Mlive.com the web site it is today, the largest in the state of Michigan."

Kowalski also co-hosted a drive time radio talk show on WDFN Radio with Sean Baligian and Ryan Terpstra.

Lions fans everywhere will miss his more than 30 years of reporting. Fox 2 will publish more information about how Kowalski died as details are confirmed. We will also publish any public funeral arraignments, should they be made available.

Reactions from Twitter:

So many wonderful beat writers in our business and Tom Kowalski was someone whose take I never neglected to read on Lions.

An extremely sad day for any of us who ever worked with or had a beer with Tom Kowalski. He passed away today suddenly & way too soon.

Stunned and heartbroken by the death of Booth's Lions beat writer Tom Kowalski at 51. Great sense of humor, a joy to be around. Unreal.
-Michael Rosenberg, Detroit Free Press

Tom Kowalski passed away today. Killer was a great reporter and a great person. And a friend. I'm stunned and saddened.
-Jamie Samuelsen, 94.7 WCSX

Tom Kowalski, one heck of a beat man covering the Lions, dead at 51. He covered the team aggressively, with a conscience. What a loss.
