The older I get, the higher the bar goes for what I consider good music.

But what they're playing on the Top 40 stations now, to me, is largely assembly-line, soulless crap.

I'd like to answer that with a resounding YES!! Seriously WTH was that last night? Even my hubby, who's in the music industry and has a very high tolerance for crap, couldn't handle it. I don't even know why Lil Wayne bothered performing, the whole thing was censored and you couldn't hear it anyway. I feel sooo bad for kids today.

And now I feel officially old!

This is like a 13-year-old girl complaining about a Slayer album. MTV has a target demo. I'm guessing most of us around here ain't it.

i've always been into classic rock and then grunge was my thing in my teens. but even when every thing started sucking with nsync and all that...i still caught myself liking a few songs and even getting why kids liked it. but nowadays i hear nothing good.
we're not old they just suck.

Early 2000s seemed even worse to me. Probably because I now know how to ignore the crap much better.

  • gotta disagree. adele performed. one of the best albums of the year, pop or otherwise. the foos got an award. i think kanye and jay are exciting, and tha carter iii from weezy was one of the best hip hop records to come out in a long time. Tyler the creator even won an award.

Said it in another whiny "mainstream is crap" thread. i think we live in an age of an overload of music. there are SO MANY bands out there worth listening to. And whats cool is alot of those bands are in the mainstream consciousness now. Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Black Keys, Decemberists, Fleet Foxes, Sufjan, The national, these are huge bands, not just indie rock kids like myself know about them.

I think if you are looking at music and not finding stuff you like, you arent looking in the right places.

Its a surreal world but to live in a society where Arcade Fire win a grammy, and everyone knows who Sufjan is, i think that can only be positive

Out of the bands you mentioned, only Radiohead is huge, especially if we're talking mainstream. Arcade Fire has gotten to be a pretty recognizable name, but there's still a pretty good portion of rock music fans that haven't heard of them or have only heard a song or 2 and even then they don't always know who it is. The rest of those have still only seen a pretty limited amount of success.

I agree that music overall is in a pretty good place, but there's very little mainstream rock that's very good. Foo's SHOULD mop the floor with any sort of mainstream rock awards these days and I think that speaks to how weak mainstream rock music is for the most part.

I don't really listen to any hiphop, but it seems to be in a good spot. At least you have people battling out to try and be the best at what they do.

the black keys are a lot more popular than that. Nearly everyone Im friends with knows/ or listens to them. They're also in every other commercial nowadays.

yeah, I haven't watched the MTV video music awards since 2001. Wow, it just doesn't appeal to me personally anymore. Like 93 video awards with PJ now :P that was bad ass. Just not into the modern award ceremony. that being said, their are still great bands out there. Mtv isn't the place that I find music I like, it's mostly awesome reccomendations from this very board.

the point is, it's ALL pop music now. nothing edgy, nothing exciting. it's all hip hop or Nickelback. it's shit. no, I don't wish the grammy's were hosted by Alan Cross with performances by AIC w/Elton John, a PJ/Soundgarden/TOTD medley, and Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Daniel Johns, but mainstream rock kinda hella sucks right now.

remember when Metallica performed One at the Grammy's? I'm not a metal guy, but that was shit hot cool.

  • and while I love the Foos, them winning an award is not a surprise. I mean, Dave Grohl is the epitome of teen-fun-awesomeness. they are the only rock band that pop kids like.

  • the Junos (Canada's Grammy's) used to be good. Now they are the same as American award shows.

you can thank Nelly Furtado and Justin Bieber.

I think people just have to remember that even in the era of so-called great music there was also a lot of crap. for every time you have a band like the clash you also have a bee-gee's. even in the great 1990, for every Pearl jam you had a bush.

the issue now is that you have some much more music and some of it is crap but some is great. artists like Adele and Mumford and sons are great and somewhat mainstream.
