Bob Dylan's Voice

I recently downloaded some Johnny Cash and he does a version of "Girl from the North Country" with Dylan, but it doesn't sound like him at all. Totally different from his Album version. I've heard him sound this way before with "Lay Lady Lay", but was just wondering what's the deal with him sounding this way on some songs?

Nashville Skyline was Dylan's 'country' album where he transformed his music yet again. In writing a country album he chose to change his singing style as well. 'Lay, Lady, Lay' is off this album as well. Amazing he could change his voice so effectively that it is at times unrecognizable. Just shows the vocal range he used to have.
  • Thanks guys, that was sending me crazy trying figure this out.
I will definitely check out Nashville Skyline.

I will definitely check out Nashville Skyline.

And it won't take long- it's only 27 minutes long lol.

And it is the only CD I know where 3 songs in a row rhyme:

    I Threw It All Away
    Peggy Day
    Lay Lady Lay

...yes, I am a Dylan freak haha.

  • Really enjoying Nashville Skyline, never listened to this album before.
I may just be me but I find Jim James of My Morning Jacket to have a similar voice to Dylan's on this album.

Supposedly the reason Dylan's voice is different on Nashville Skyline is because he quit smoking for several weeks when he was recording it.

My favorite Dylan singing was during that particular era (Nashville, New Morning, Planet Waves, Blood On The Tracks).

When I first heard Lay Lady Lay, I was wondering if that was him. The man is a genius.

yeah man. I bought Essential Bob Dylan 11-12 years ago, and never knew he sang "Lay, Lady, Lay or even "Quinn the Eskimo" till I got that album, just didn't sound like him. I'm so used to the raspy monotone Dylan. Even on his first album (the songs I've heard have a different vocal delivery a little bit).

  • I read somewhere that Nashville Skyline Dylan sounds different because the vocal recording was sped up just a tad, and I also read that the same is true for Springsteen's Hungry Heart recording. Not sure if this is a myth or not . . .
