    I thought it was really funny at first, but as it went on and kept getting more over the top I found it less and less funny.

    Yeah, over the top can be good. I just thought it was hilarious at the beginning, sort of the typical "in the club with my homies" type music playing while we're seeing a less than glamorous scene with kind of pathetic looking people. To me, that by itself would have been hilarious. Simple and clever.
