BASEBALL; Mattingly Chooses Seat on Yank Bench Over Barber's Chair
    By JACK CURRY
    Published: August 16, 1991

Don Mattingly, the team's best player, asked the Yankees to trade him two months ago and they said nothing doing. Yesterday, the Yankees asked Mattingly to get a haircut and he said the same thing.

As a result, Mattingly was benched, fined and left bristling as he repeated his request to be sent elsewhere. For the rebuilding Yankees, it seemed like old times.

Four Yankee players were reprimanded for having hair long enough to violate the team dress and grooming code, but Mattingly received the harshest penalty by being removed from the starting lineup minutes before the first pitch of yesterday's game against the Kansas City Royals at Yankee Stadium.

Major league players sign statements before the season indicating they have read the team rules.

"If someone from management tells you you need a haircut," said Yankees Manager Stump Merrill, "you get a haircut."

Merrill said Mattingly, the team captain, would not play for the Yankees until his hair was shortened. Mattingly spoke about possibly leaving New York, saying he had asked General Manager Gene Michael to scout out trade options.

"Maybe I don't belong in the organization anymore," Mattingly told reporters after the Yankees had defeated the Royals, 5-1, without him. "I talked to him about moving me earlier in the year. He said we'll talk at the end of the year. Maybe this is their way of saying we don't need you anymore."

The 30-year-old Mattingly is the highest paid and most recognizable player on the Yankees, with a .316 career batting average. After Merrill told the first baseman he would not play yesterday if he did not get his hair cut, Mattingly said he felt "pushed into a corner." The manager also told a relief pitcher, Steve Farr; tonight's starting pitcher, Pascual Perez, and Matt Nokes, a catcher, to get haircuts. Nokes said he would, Perez was unsure and Farr was unavailable for comment. Says He'll Probably Get Trim

Mattingly, whose brown hair curls just above his collar, said he would probably get it trimmed today in order to play against the Chicago White Sox. He called a players-only team meeting before the game and told his teammates not to be concerned "with fighting my war." Mattingly also severely criticized Michael, who is nicknamed Stick, for the "petty" action.

"It's kind of silly to me, but we're not winning and this is Stick's club," said Mattingly, who said he had his hair trimmed two weeks ago by the bullpen catcher, Carl Taylor. "He wants an organization that will be puppets for him and do what he wants."

Michael left for Scranton, Pa., immediately after the game to watch the Columbus Clippers, the Yankees' top farm team, play last night. Reached at the stadium last night, Michael said: "He's the captain and he's got a big contract. If we asked the captain to get his hair cut, he should get it cut."

"I don't want to trade Don Mattingly," he added.

Mattingly did not reveal his earlier trade request until yesterday and the squabble over a haircut seems to indicate there are simmering troubles between the player and the organization. The former All-Star first baseman said he was confused and embarrassed about the punishment and hinted there were festering problems.

"A lot of things bothered me," he said, without specifying any. "I've kept my mouth shut about most of them. If I talked about them, I would really go off." Will Ask 'Nicely' for Trade

Though Mattingly said he would not, and could not, demand a trade, he planned to "ask politely and nicely" for one. He said: "Maybe now that I'm such a problem, this is the time to do it."

Merrill said he had enforced the rule on his own accord, but Mattingly did not agree and pointed at Michael.

"It's pretty clear where everything comes from," Mattingly said.

"If Stick wants the players to do exactly what he says, then he should be the pitching coach, batting coach and fielding coach. Then come down here and be a part of it. But take part of the blame, too."

Mattingly said he quietly approached Michael in late June when the Minnesota Twins were in town and asked to be traded. Mattingly, who is batting .305 with 7 home runs and 48 runs batted, is in the first year of a five-year, $19.3 million contract.

"I felt like we weren't going the way I wanted us to," said Mattingly when asked why he wanted a trade. "The Yankees said they had a five-year plan. I didn't have five years." Would Be Hard to Trade

The Twins are a team Mattingly said he would enjoy playing for because of their strong work ethic and carefree attitude. Since he missed 60 games with back trouble last year, has a large contract and has apparently lost most of his power as a batter, Mattingly would probably be hard to trade. He is also one of the most popular Yankees and a trade would not sit well with the Yankee fans, who are hanging in while the team rebuilds.

Mattingly has a no-trade clause in his contract and must approve any deal.

"There must be someone who would be interested in me," he said. "I'd go somewhere and hit eighth or ninth. I feel like I can still play."

When Mattingly was asked if he planned to meet with Michael, he said: "I'd rather not. I've had enough of him, to tell you the truth."

Most of Mattingly's teammates thought the haircut ultimatum was some sort of joke. "I think it's so dumb, I'm not even going to talk about it," said the designated hitter Kevin Maas.

"It's nickel and dime," said the second baseman Steve Sax. "Somebody's hair is a ridiculous way to tear down a team."

Mattingly was honored in the spring when the Yankees named him the 10th captain in franchise history, joining legendary names like Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. But he said yesterday that the honor now felt hollow.

"They should take that away," Mattingly said of his captaincy. "It doesn't mean anything. Take it. It's been stripped. I've been impeached."
