All of them deserve to be up there except for Shatner and Alien Ant Farm.

Shatner's is purposefully awful and AAF's cover is pretty straightforward, and forgetable, some may even call it ...fun, but definitely nothing to have negative feelings over.

Now that I think of it, I think it was pretty cool for AAF to cover Jackson at a time when he was most shunned by pop culture.

I agree too. Shatner was just being his usual ham-ilocious self (come on, Rolling Stone readers - grow a sense of humor!)...and AAF wasn't bad, really. I actually heard the AAF version of Smooth Criminal over my supermarket's background music only yesterday, and while it's not as good as Michael Jackson's (this might be my favorite MJ song), it's not horrible or anything.

Now Miley Cyrus covering Nirvana? Poor Kurt must be spinning in his grave over that one. I mean, LOOK at this girl! Clearly, she hasn't the dimmest clue what Nirvana or Kurt Cobain was all about.

Oh my God. I actually watched Britney Spears meowing, yodeling and hiccuping her way through "Satisfaction."

Newch, you owe me 2 minutes of my life back.

^ Well, do yourself a favor and don't compound the problem by watching Miley Cyrus cover "Smells Like Teen Spirit". I certainly could use that 4 minutes back.

    How do you unwatch something?

I give a pass to Jessica Simpson because the video is good, you press the mute button, she was ridiculously hot in that video plus it's a dumb goofy song to begin with, no harm in my opinion :D

Hmmm. That may be true, CF, but in my mind... you have a smokey, sultry lounge with lots of dark red wallpaper and gold brocade, right in the middle of your house. And there is a little stage with a tiny spotlight, and of course, a disco ball.

Yep. That's the image I'm hanging on to.

Eh...I have no beef with Limp Bizkit and Alien Ant Farm. However, if you want to talk about Scissor Sisters destroying the soul of Comfortably Numb...

First song popped in my head was Limp Bizkit, Behind Blue Eyes

I too liked the Alien Ant Farm song and Madonna's cover wasn't too bad, IMO

  • For an awful cover (with all due respect to the recently deceased Jani Lane), check out We Will Rock You by Warrant.
  • Ive never seen/heard this Shatner LSD cover...pretty funny. But is it really a cover, or more of a parody?

And after recently attending an A Perfect Circle show, I'd have to petition RS to add their cover of When the Levee Breaks. What a terrible thing to do to a classic Zepp song. I mean, they butcher it to the point where no one in the crowd even knew they were covering a classic tune... Wish I could get those precious moments of my life back...

"It was written by The Arrows and made famous by Joan Jett - or "Pat Benatar," as Spears famously called her when promoting the single. People are too hard on Britney. She was close enough."

Fuck You, Rolling Stone. Pat Benatar is awesome. So is Joan Jett. Your willingness to dismiss these two women and their contributions to modern music while sucking up to Brittney Spears* does nothing but support the notion that you are a disrespectful mess of your former self.

I will happily continue not supporting you for the rest of my life, you shambles.

Nonsense, that is a brilliant cover. The record version is beautiful and haunting. At least they try to re-interpert it in their own style and not just directly copy the song note for note....

Wow, that list and the videos that came with it made my soul hurt. As others have said though, I didn't really mind the AAF cover back then. For being a "terrible" cover it certainly was popular, it was on the radio every 5 minutes.

I wasn't even aware of Britney covering The Rolling Stones, and I have no idea what that was about. That was just uncalled for.

As for Miley and her Nirvana cover... I don't even really know what to think. I'm not all that familiar with Miley, but that video was pretty goofy. At least she knows the song, unlike Avril Lavigne who once called it "Smells Like Team Spirits".

That Alien Art Farm cover is pretty good. Out of all the MJ songs to cover that one came out of left field and was a nice surprise.

Limp Bizkit? Awful. Who decided that the Speak N Spell was necessary?

I agree. Most of those covers on eMotive are terrible. What they did to People Are People was shameful.

I Love Rock and Roll was a horrible song long before Spears tried to cover it.

  • The most perplexing thing about that list to me is that in the blurb for Crow's Sweet Child it says "Big Daddy" isn't a Sandler classic like "Airheads" was? At what point in time did that piece of crap Airheads become anything close to a classic?
