Rico's Review: Life Can Go-Cluthe Lee
In this Rico's Review I review Cluthe/Lee's second album; Life Can Go.
In 2009 Matt Cluthe and Chris Lee met each other on Pearl Jam's Online Community. Despite living in two different states they manage to write songs and send them to each other online. Although it is more difficult then it seems they manage to make it work and create the alternative/folk rock band Cluthe/Lee. After releasing their debut album in 2009 the band is back again in 2011 with their second album; Life can Go.
The album’s opening song “In a Corner” really kicks the album off with a bang. With the song’s bluesy guitar and drum kicks, it displays the rawness of Matt’s voice. Something that I think their first album lacked a little. This seems to be the theme of the next song, “This Is” With its guitar solos you get lost in its rock roots. “Abbreviated” is a classic Cluthe/Lee with its poetic lyrics… “Life can be abbreviated.” The next song, “Oh, my Darling” is like the shores of an ocean…..brings you in and lets you float away. Matt’s vocals are perfect with Chris’s guitar and drums. “Orwell’s Warning” story lyrics really makes the song, the music making you sway back and forth. The next song “Pieces Apart” is a real beautiful piece with backing vocals from Matt’s lovely wife, Laurel. Her backing vocals with the bass and the guitar are what make this song. I think she should get her own song on the next record, I’m just saying. One of my favorite songs is “Defrost Mode!” Because it’s a fun song with great vocals, great lyrics and great guitar, it has everything! What’s stunning about “Grown” is Matt’s and Chris’s haunting yells mixed with keyboard type music, similar to Pearl Jam’s “Arc.” “On a Wire” and Hoping for a Miracle” flow perfect together. Plus it has a killer guitar and drums! My favorite song is the short little song called “Reels Fly By” It’s a mid-tempo song with fantastic music and vocals from Matt. It’s just one of those songs that I need to replay all the time! “Life Can Go” brings you back to earth with Matt’s amazing vocals that seem to soar alongside Chris’s guitar work. The album’s closer “Not Listening” is non like any on the album but really is a great song that has a cool bonus track called “Inside –Out” that makes my smile and sad that the C-D is over.
Overall this is a powerful record from a band that is climbing to the top. With Matt’s top notch vocals and lyrics and Chris’s hard hitting music, you have a record that brings you to many different places that you didn’t think could be reached from two guys with a few instruments. If you are looking for an album not so main stream, then I recommend “Life Can Go.”
