#599 and #600 home runs in Detroit tonight. He's been one of the lone bright spots on a miserable Twins season. But what a night for a hell of a guy.

Welcome to the 600 club Big Jim!

That's awesome, definitely one of the good guys in the game.
  • really hope he turns out to really be clean. I hate to speculate like that, but you just have to, really. Congrats to him though, he seems like a class player.

334 of those came with the Indians! Congrats to a great "clean" player who is one of the best baseball guys of all time!

I'm glad for him I really am, but how do we arbitrarily say someone is "clean" and someone is not "clean"? We all have been led to believe that Jetes (the 1990s-2000s Yanks), Griffey (A-Rod at least), Thome (Manny at least), and others spent their entire careers surrounded by steroid users without succumbing to the temptation. Maybe they are, maybe they aren't, maybe they just used in a discreet fashion (using people that no one else did and in private), maybe they did it openly and everyone is covering for them without opening their mouths (not likely). I personally don't care, because our hatred of steroids is really just a cold war remnant (Russians used it first, and no I'm not basing this on Rocky IV), but I always find it funny when we believe what media members decide to tell us about players without really "knowing". Does anyone here actually know? Why do we care they all were great? Either way congrats Thome.

Moreover, what exactly is a PED? Is eating steak injected with steroids taking a PED? What about caffein? It makes you less tired. Kind of silly to me.

Awesome!! Congratulations to one of the best to play the game the right way! I've always had a ton of respect for Thome.

As far as I am concerned, the 600+ hr club consists of:

    Thome - 600
    Jr - 630
    Willie - 660
    Babe - 714
    Hank - 755

I see no reason to add anyone else to the list. ;)

I agree. I'm a Twins season ticket holder, and fans would go line up on the right field plaza at Target Field during his ABs the last few weeks trying to catch a HR ball, and the Minnesota media's been all over it, but other than that, no one seems too interested. Baseball's been around for 130+ years...there have been thousands and thousands of guys have played this game, and yet only 8 players - 8! - have hit 600. That's crazy!

On the issue of whether or not he's clean, of course we'll never actually know. But with the level of scrutiny out there in the last decade, the level of investigation that's gone on (not from MLB, but from others), with the amount of players outing teammates and players coming forward themselves, if Jim Thome ever used PEDs or steroids, he'd be a great baseball player, a great guy and a Hall of Fame secret-keeper. I think there would be some level of professional suspicion by now and the fact that he's been beyond reproach as a stand-up, honest and good guy by teammates, managers, opponents, umpires, fans, the media etc throughout his career is pretty telling...

But fuck that...this guy just hit a huge milestone. Congrats Big Jim! Great, great guy!

For those who don't know, the Twins usually have pretty clever/funny commercials in the MN/upper midwest area. Here's one from this year featuring Jim Thome.

Thome is the man. I was lucky enough to meet him on the field at an Ohio State game a few years ago. Couldn't be a nicer guy and if he doesn't get in the Hall someday it will be a crime.

well i think he's clean too...but that taint is hovering over all players who came out of the era unfortunately. ....i'd say that and him being a dh for the last 5 or 6 years are the main reasons this didn't get much attention.
