Been a fan of Incubus for the past 15 years, and it is clear they are following in PJ's path.
Their new album is very similar to no code in my opinion. Their live shows are freaking
phenomenal. Whats everyone think???

I love Incubus. They've been one of my favorite bands for a long, long time. That being said, Light Grenades and If Not Now, When? are disasters. The latter is a complete waste of the immense musical talents of Jose Pasillas and Mike Einziger. Both contain wretched song writing. After the incredible streak of S.C.I.E.N.C.E., Make Yourself, Morning View, and A Crow Left of the Murder, it's disappointing. But I guess no band can be perfect. I hope they return to the studio more promptly than they did last time and return to form.

I don't necessarily get the Incubus/PJ comparisons. I mean, the moved from rawness (Ten/SCIENCE) to more refined, focused experimentation. And they've both generally grown over the years rather than remaining stagnant. But that is probably true of most long-lasting, successful rock bands.
It makes much more sense to live in the present tense.

Yeah, the new album is a disappointment. Mike Einzinger is a god on guitar, and only shines
on adolescents. Science was such a great album. Their live show makes up for the past 2 albums
    though.

Not a fan of their new album at all - actually the past two albums

  • Light grenades was ok. If Not Now, When? was, well, a disaster I guess. Maybe that's a little harsh but it's like Our Lady Peace and VAST's last albums... it sounds like everything else out there to me. A real disappointment.
  • You guys are smoking crack. If Not Now When is a great piece of work. Yes, the guitar is pulled back but there's still some real, real good stuff on there. Boyd takes it to another level vocally.

And Light Grenades has some really good aggressive stuff too, I think it gets judged too much by the singles which were radio friendly but still really good pop rock songs.

Defiance could be the best Incubus song of the last 3 albums.

Great band. I've seen them 10+ times and I always enjoy seeing them. I just wish Boyd wasn't such a boy toy for the little girls. Makes it hard for a 30 year old guy like me watching the concert when the 18 year old girls behind me are shrieking because he just took his shirt off...

I love the early stuff, and tolerate Make Yourself/Morning View. Have not liked anything of theirs since then.

  • I am seeing them right after PJ20 in Mansfield, MA. I am a huge incubus fan, I really like the new album.

how is if not now, when? similar to no code?
  • unknownunknown Posts: 531
Its similar in that is is a huge risk for this band. Similar to when pj put out no code.
It is different from everything they have done. Also, I think no code had to grow on
people, just like if not now when. Bottom line, its not my favorite album. I don't know
if they will ever get back to what makes them so freaking good.... rocking the shit out
of the place. If you would have seen them on their morning view tour, then you know
what I am talking about. The tour started last night at red rocks, and it was streaming online.
I watched it, and they pretty much tore shit up again. I think they may be the best live band
out there. In the company of Wolves was phenomenal. They are also changing their sets up
like pj, lets just hope they start playing more from the album science.

Is it that much of a risk? Incubus sucked back to their core audience a few albums ago imo. PJ was still pretty huge when they dropped No Code.

I saw them a bunch of times before that album was out and it was always high energy. But the shows I saw after Make Yourself were definitely more chill than on the Science tour. The energy on stage during the Science tour was insane.

  • i dont see them as innovators. if anything they've followed the PJ path by their non musical actions more than anything else. The whole political album thing they did in 2004 with the anti bush and antiwar stuff, and i think they even sued ticketmaster at some point or something.

I think PJ is innovative because of their non musical actions.

I never got to see them on their Science tour, but I heard it was insane! I've been checking the
set lists for this tour, and they have been phenomenal. First city they played for 2 1/2 hours.
I know they are big PJ fans themselves, so I think they have looked to them as examples.
Whats everybody's favorite song by them? I think mine is Glass right now, that song speaks
    to me at the moment.
