This may have come up a million times on here but i am newer to this fan club.Although a fan since the first release. Before i comment i have followed them through all studio releases<most of yhe live releases, any singles i can get as well. But anyway i honestly do love Matt Camreon, dude has more talent in his little finger than i have through my whole body.technically sound in every way but i feel he is almost to perfect,my personal favorite drummer was Jack Irons.I just feel he played a little looser and fit better.I know nothing stays the same i mean whats the use in putting out every album that sounds the same.Matt fits perfectly with soundgarden and thier way of technical playing, again Matt kills it but sorry i feel Jack is a P.J. natural.Listen to Matt is really doing on the studio version of Grievance, could Jack even do that? But listen to the whole album of YIELD i cant explain it other than how i did but thats it.P.J. is and always will be my favorite band but thats why they have different colors and music styles, everyone entitled to thier opinion.sorry if this offends anyone (not intentional).would like to hear any and all responses and if you havea fav. drummer and why.thanks!

Hi love what Matt has done for the band (not sure they would still be together without him).
I love Dave A as a drummer with the band though. He hit hard and loud, was loose and the band was nowhere near as tight. But I loved all of that. Probably get flamed for this but I preferred the less polished PJ. That hasn't diminished my love, just personal preference
Im not supersticious, Im just a littlesticious.
  • I'm going to help feed a constructive debate. Although Matt be my favorite, i honestly love each drummer and what they contributed to pearl jam. Each drummer has helped produce songs that are unique to their era in pearl jam and i'm grateful for that. It's helped keep things exciting. No two albums sound alike. And every album brings something new. Which is definitely hard to come by.

All drummers are different, I think Dave A was amazing on Ten but Matt is now PJ's drummer and that's that. Matt is tight and consistent and that is what musicians look for in a drummer. :|

Dave A was so amazing on Ten that he's getting credit for drumming on Ten, even though he didn't drum on Ten. ;)

  • I argree with all responses i just am a drummer and find it interesting what others may think about drummers with different styles. The band is just that and work well as a unit watching some of the live dvds are awesome like the one @ the garden (Matt) so dont get me wrong i justlike what Jack did he was just slippery back there.single video therory was awesome.Matt i think for my taste in this band is too perfect but some of my favorites are done with him.Army reserve, amongst the waves,LIGHT YEARS,grievance just to name very few.its not a big deal just something to say since i enjoy drumming.thats all.also i am sayin meaningless things to anyone including me who just play the damn songs to listen and enjoy!
  • If anyone interested this link is to a site page at reverb nation.i posted some (poor quality) practice taped tunes from various bands i played in.The 2 P.J. tunes keep in mind we were just starting and broke up before we could play them even slightly well but anyway.http://www.reverbnation.com/#!/artist/a ... ngs/819384 and my intention of this post was not to bring this site up because i am not in any bands now and they were done for fun.if the link doesnt work u can go to reverb nation and search for VARIOUS BANDS I PLAYED DRUMS WITH should bring to my page i made on there. if u decide to listen dont slam me to hard it was all in the name of fun.

I don't think there is a problem having a debate over who you think has been the best drummer in Pearl Jam or who has been your preferred. However, someone starting a thread saying Matt shouldn't be the drummer and someone else should was just wrong. Hopefully that won't happen in this thread :D

I'm also a drumming PJ fan and always get sucked in to these drummer discussions. For me I was a big Dave A fan as he was the drummer of Pearl Jam from as early as I saw footage or interviews about the band. I was slightly sad to see him go... Until I heard "No Code".

Jack was my kind of drummer. Tight but loose. Inventive but not in a prog/complicated kinda way. He had/has a particular sound to his kit and his playing and he fit PJ at that time like a glove.

Matt is now on the stool and long may he reign. The first two releases with Matt showed us what he could bring to the band. His work on Grievance alone gives me goose bumps and the much maligned Riot Act also had an obvious Cameron influence. Without getting into a great debate about where the band is headed, the last two albums have been (as a whole) pretty straight forward musically and wherever Pearl Jam are headed I personally hope they don't consider this their "day job" and leave the experimentation for assorted side projects.

    Sorry.. What was the question???!!

i always feel compelled to jump in on the PjDrummer threads...i've always played in bands, and always want to play more music then i am...The more different situations i play in, the more i insight i have into what makes this debate tick..

Anyways, i'll always love 'em all, in this order, for these reasons:

Jack:Inventive, dynamic, powerful. I don't know if he hits harder then Matt when he's really all out, but it sounds like it on CD and Boot. Just a great organic, earthly flow. I miss how he fit into this band, and i'm sad i missed my chance to see him with them.

Matt: A machine. So perfect, all the time. Can't say enough about how he has kept this band at a top level on every show he's played for over 13 years now. His strengths do play to his other band, but PJ knows that they're honored to have him, and us fans should never stop thanking him. #1 reason our fave band is still our fave band. Also, if he had only played on Temple and nothing else, i would still fondly remember him ...

Dave A: Busy, creative, lyrical playing in a way. He was certainly trying to accent the rest of the music in ways that we don't see anymore. I've always thought Matt is farther away from Dave then Jack. Was scared for my favorite band when i heard he was out. Lots of memories from being a kid, catching all those little extra fills, lot of time listening to my tape of Atl94 or SNL94, just enjoying his playing on Daughter, Porch, etc...

Dave K: Would love to hear what could've been. I listen to Ten the least anymore, so i can't really critique, Also no boots that i give serious listening time too from his era. There are certain things that i did enjoy of his that no one has quite nailed since...Heck for that matter, the original "video single" version of Alive, i've always loved that version, and that was Matty Chamberlain i believe, who i've loved in many projects since! Ah welll

    cheers
  • These last 2 posts i really enjoyed reading.again there is no rigth or wrong answer just opinions which are like..... well you know.but these last 2 ppl hit on the newonces of Jack i was refering to.the tight but loose stuff its just hard to explain.i try to copy it and suck at it but i can hear it so thats what i like most, about the drummer end of it anyway.i dont play any guitar but those 2 or 3 depending have it together which u only get with time together and natural ability.i do like to see what non drummers or ppl who just love music and not play instruments have to say cause u can always use any information for benefit.also u can rip comment on some practice recordings that i did with a few differenrt local bands some covers some original stuff good or bad i dont care love to hear any and all http://www.reverbnation.com/#!/artist/a ... ngs/819384 not trying to sell anything they r free to listen and love it or hate and eberything in between!i have only 2 P.J. covers we did but i might add more.also there is a link to a P.J. tribute band called TEN on my page they sound really good in my opinion also free to listen!
