Somehow this doesn't shock me. This ranks up there with him saying he was the voice of my generation and called Lil Wayne this generation's Jimi Hendrix.

This dude needs an advisor on public speaking. Someone who can hear what he wants to say before he says it and then somehow try to convince him that what he is wanting to say is utter stupidity and shit and therefore should refrain.

On the contrary, I think his publicists probably are of the 'no publicity is bad publicity' opinion... one which I would venture to guess that he shares. At this point, though, he says outrageous things and people just think to themselves 'oh, Kanye is at it again'. I don't pay the guy any attention when I hear about him talking... A bit like the Noel Gallagher of the rap world.

Good point. I definitely have gotten to the point where whatever he says goes in one ear and out the other.

I think he's right though when he says he'll be "the voice of a generation" only for different reasons than I think he is acknowledging.

I don't want to defend him but i think what he is saying is that so many people talk shit about him that you would think he was Hitler. anyway, he does have some good stuff.

But for a "lyrical genius", he could certainly convey the idea without drawing a rather silly comparison.

  • i love his music
he is a great performer and writes some truly amazing stuff IMO. seeing him in 2008 (before all this drama) was one of the best shows i've ever been to.

and before all this taylor swift bs - he didn't get picked out for saying stupid and meaningless things
it's just after that stupid thing that he did, everything he says is picked apart and used to attack him and his music
and so in retaliation to all of this bad publicity, he's become a lot more opinionated and angry and full of rants all the time. which is a shame because it's doing no good for him and no justice to the great music that he continues to make.

i'm not condoning or defending his behaviour - i just feel like the media are taking things out of hand, out of proportion and context.

it's hardly like he is actually comparing himself to hitler, just using it in an offhand way to describe how he feels.
the fact that other people - more important people - get away with saying stupider and dumber shit is what the media should be reporting on.
the fact that this is news is just annoying.

    okay rant over.sorry.

this is a pretty narrow minded statement and its pretty obvious you arent aware of hip hop, both classic and modern. Biggie and Tupac died over a decade ago and both have stood the test of time. Mos Def and Talib Kweli as a group and solo, turned out at least 3 classic albums. All over a decade old. Kanye's five albums have done extremely well both critically and commercially. All of them. Its generally accepted that Eminem and Jay-z are two of the most gifted mc's of all time, Eminem obviously is hugely successful and Jay-z continues to be a major name in hip hop having created, Reasonable Doubt, the Blueprint and Black Album all considered stone cold classics. All a decade old, or older. The list goes on and on. Kanye isnt a new musician. I first heard about him in 2001, when he produced a ton of the jay-z classic The Blueprint, which appeared on many many top albums of the 2000's lists, and in the majority of those was among the top 5. So he's been around for a decade. Over a decade. When will he fade and his music will no longer stand the test of time? His stuff from a decade ago is lauded as being part of one of the best albums ever released in hip hop!

I can understand people being turned off by the guy. Thats your own bag. But to not respect him as an artist and as a talent is pretty silly, even more crazy is to suggest an entire musical genre is meaningless.

As silly as him lip synching or as silly as him having to use autotune to hide the fact that he cant sing?

Well I appreciate what youre saying, and I agree with the disagreement on the original post that the rap genre just fades, I love everything in your post and agree with all the greats you mentioned (Even though you forgot to mention N.W.A, which has stood the test of time for over 20 (!!!!!) years) comparing Kanye to guys like Kweli, jay z, dre, eminem etc is just fucking asinine IMO. He has done some great work producing (especially with Jay Z) but as a rapper himself he is awful, and arrogant. Great beats cannot make up for no flow, terrible lyrics and unoriginal voice IMO.

to each his own i guess. all 5 of kanye's albums have done extremely well critically and commercially. Several appeared on multiple best of the 2000's end of decade lists. And his most recent one, My beautiful Dark Twisted, was #1 on multiple best albums of the year list. I dont think he's getting attention because his rhymes and productions are inane, and silly or juvenile. Kanye is among the best mc's of all time and an incredible lyricist and producer. And i dont see how being arrogant makes his art any less important. Jay-z, dre and eminem are extremely arrogant, i would bet all 3, in fact i know all 3 would suggest they are the best mc and in the case of dre the best producer of all time. The fact they view themselves that way doesnt make their art any less powerful and important. Lets face it, Michael Jordan is arrogant. Many people are. Many artists are. I think you are missing the importance of kanye's lyrics. His last album was among the most deep and dense hip hop records ive heard in years. He simotaneously explores the meaninglessness and emptiness of celebruty culture, while explicitly delving into his own struggles with that. He's not someone comfortable in his own skin. He's not comfortable as a human in America, nor as a black man in america, nor as a celebrity in america. All are spoken to and about on the record. It aint simple stuff. The fact he can deal with these issues yet still create music that is danceable, nod your head-able, and can be enjoyed by all, hipsters and teenyboppers alike, is a testmament to his genius.

There is nothing original in any of that.

oh come on now...it is clearly a big exaggeration, "they look at me like i'm hitler or something". all he's saying is "why do people look at me as some complete fucking menace". he isn't truly comparing himself to hitler...not that difficult to understand.

also, i agree that the man can be out of line at times. but he is a genius in his genre. excellent lyricist, incredible producer, and his passion behind everything he does makes it hard to turn away and not respect him. i absolutely love his music. i think his last album (my beautiful dark twisted fantasy) is a completely amazing piece of work. not to mention what he just did with jay (watch the throne). his music will DEFINITELY stand the tests of time. he is one of the highest acclaimed hip hop acts ever. he started a completely unique new style of the genre.

I'm not really a fan of his lyrics (he has some pretty cringe worthy lines), but I adore his production and beats. MBDTF is a great album though, I can get lost in the sounds alone on that album, which is a rare thing for me with rap. And besides that, I kind of love his persona...he's an unforgiving ass that does what he wants no matter what, and even if you don't agree with his actions, you have to give him credit for being fearless.
    Thanks EPOTTSIII!

You would think someone that is as talented and great as Kayne supposedly is would be able to sing without the aid of computer software or having to resort to lip synching like Milli Vanilli during his live performances.
