so it basically goes to the most disturbing picture out there, for the most part anyway

Why you call them disturbing? That's the ugly truth of our modern world. We have to face the reality sometime. The world in which we are living is not the ideal one. Accept it and try not to live in a pink bubble.

I'm well aware of the ugly truth of the modern world, that doesn't mean I'm supposed to be accepting or immune to it's disturbing images

So, you approach the topic aesthetically. OK then. I mean, you don't have to like them. But, just remember that one photograph equals one thousand words. It's not only about the picture and its beauty or not. There is always a meaning behind them. ;)

Amazing what a click of a camera can capture.

Don't know if anyone else has been to this, but at the Newseum in DC there's a great Pulitzer Prize Photograph Gallery. It has a ton of pictures and the stories behind them. Was really interesting, had to check it out for one of my classes last year and ended up really liking it.
