I always hate when songs "fade out" on studio recordings...why cant they just end as if they were playing them live? Never really understood this. Just wondering if this bothers anyone else...do you prefer the "fade out" or an abrupt, direct END to a song?

i did always find fade outs a bit silly. but i ain't gonna go bat shit if a song fades out. it doesn't bother me, but yeah i found it out.

  • It doesn't bother me that much, but i always look forward to hearing how bands end songs like that live. I remember seeing PJ on Letterman when Yield was out and hearing for the first time how Wishlist ends
  • I don't like it because I always feel weird singing along.

Some songs it works, some songs it's like "what awesome little musical jewels did they get rid of?"

or when they are talking over the beginning of the tune, this bites.

Depends on the song for me... some songs have music that works with a fade out, and then some songs just call for an abrupt end.

Yeah, like " I wish I was the radio song, the one you couldn't turn off".
"First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win ."

"With our thoughts we make the world"
  • I used to slowly turn the volume down on songs I didn't want to listen to so that my brother would think it was ending. It didn't always work though. It would be halfway through one of his songs and I'd try to fade it out and he would notice, lol

Gotta say I'm not a fan of the fade out either - it just sounds way too produced, you know? If anyone knew how to do an abrupt end to a song, it was the Ramones for sure!

  • I don't like fade outs. They seem like a...lazy way to end a song, I think.

Also, if you're listening to a REALLY GOOD song and it fades out, it makes you feel like you're missing part of the song! (IE: Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower.)
