Anyone seen this documentary? It's a hoot. But also scary to think how fucking crazy these people are. It's also kind of worrying when you consider that 'several recent studies and surveys by sociologists and political scientists...have estimated the number of evangelicals in the U. S. at about 25-30% of the population, or roughly between 70 and 80 million people.' - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evangelica ... e_there.3F

'Jesus Camp is a 2006 American documentary film directed by Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing about a charismatic Christian summer camp, where children spend their summers learning and practicing their prophetic gifts and being taught that they can "take back America for Christ."

    Here's a quote from it:

"The Devil goes after the young. Those who cannot fend for themselves...And whilst we're on the subject, let me say something about Harry Potter: Warlocks are enemies of God!!...And if they had been in the Old Testament Harry Potter would have been put to death! You don't make heroes out of Warlocks!"

The bit I know of Jesus the man...

    He taught Love,

hope that is on the curriculum and not judging others but accepting them for
what they choose to believe and to love.

It's a disturbing documentary that's for sure. I feel sorry for the kids. Another good documentary is Bill Maher's "Religulous" and the ridiculous counterpoint film "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed" from Ben Stein. I was recently reading about how the belief in a religion is actually a form of mental illness. I was raised Catholic, but have since been cured.

throughout history the church has used Jesus to their specific wants
holy war is a fucking oxymoron

to be a christian, at least in the church of my youth, you must believe in the virgin birth and the resurrection.
the teachings of Christ are moot

blessed are the peacemakers?? sorry JC, but that one never did take on

Reminds me of a a picture I saw of someone holding a sign at what I assume was an anti-Tea Party really.

"Obama isn't the brown-skinned Socialist who wants to give free health care to everyone. You're thinking of Jesus."
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.

    That is funny.

Citing Jesus as socialist healthcare is self-defeating for that cause though. People have been on a very long waitlist to be physically healed, he hasn't taken any new customers since 032 AD. He's actually worse than Canada. :D

I've thought about it for a long time. Truth is, Jesus don't want me for a sunbeam. Just wants me to be kind.

My hubby is a concert promoter and for his day job works in the Christian rock genre. A few years ago at a fest, one of the preachers went up to him and asked "Are you still listening to that heavy metal music or have you been saved yet?"

  • That movie has some VERY disturbing moments.

    1) children are made to get down on their knees and pray to a cardboard cut out of George W Bush.

    2) a young boy of about 10 robotically recites "I was saved at 6 because I wanted more." That a 6 year-old feels unfulfilled by life is a bit laughable but the way he phrases it almost as a question makes it sound like he's desperately looking for the approval of adults who've fed him such nonsense.

    3) Ted Haggard talks with two young boys in a very "creepy man from down the street" way, rubbing his chest while he asks "are you coming to camp with us? ...yes? ...ohhh.... that's FABULOUS!...." It gives me the creeps to know he was doing meth and hiring male hookers about 5 years older than these boys when that was shot.

    4) the leader shrieks at the kids telling them that Harry Potter should be put to death and calls him a "Warlock."

    5) a young boy about 8 is asked if he's allowed to watch Harry Potter. He says that his mother won't let him but "I can watch it when I go to my Dad's house" and gets a very sad and disconnected look on his face.

    6) Ted Haggard again jokes about how "politicians do what we tell them to do because we are the biggest voting block in America and what we say goes." Or words to that effect.

    7) Ted Haggard again talks about how "God is always watching you" and then looks directly into the camera saying something about how "I know what you were doing last night." You can tell he doesn't believe in God at all... thinks of himself as God and just wants to control people out of fear.
  • Oh... and the most disturbing one...

    8) the young boy who was "saved" is home schooled. He talks about global warming with his mother and how average temperatures have risen 2 degrees in the last couple of decades. Before he's able to think about it, she snaps "and that's not very much, is it?" he very quickly agrees in a tone that kinda sounds like "I know if I question anything you say, there will be hell to pay."

These camps and the whole Evangelical movement is funded heavily by the oil industry. That's a fact.

But the reason they spell out is that Evangelicals all believe that "the rapture" is coming any day now. And why bother saving the world from global environmental shut down if you're moving out soon anyway, right?

It's scary how those people are brainwashed by all that money from the oil industry... so they can continue to rape the world.

How does the oil industry fit into this?

Did I not just explain that in pretty plain English that the documentary explains that the oil industry pours millions into the "Evangelical movement" so they can grow their numbers of people who see no need in saving the environment?

Who do you think pays for those multi-million-dollar churches and Jesus camps in smaller, low-income areas in the south? You think those are paid for with "donations from the flock?"

Should we have not judged the Nazis, but just accepted them and loved them?

I have seen it, and you know I'm one of the most anti-religion people around here, but the thing is, I went to an Evangelical Christian camp every summer when I was a kid, and it wasn't anything like what is seen in Jesus Camp. I think the camp shown in this film represents a small minority of people who call themselves Evangelicals. The counselors at the camp I went to were pretty cool, actually. We would have daily prayers and devotionals at night, but it was more about having fun in the outdoors than being religious. I have many more fond memories of Christian camp than I do of public school.

However, my church did send me and all the other high school kids to a huge conference out in Indiana when I was 14. That whole fucking thing freaked me out... there was much more of the in-your-face kind of Christianity, and we had many deep discussions about it. I remember getting frustrated when we would get into groups and have to ask and answer questions about it, because it was then that I realized that I really didn't understand Christianity. I felt like a dunce because I couldn't get it. I would rather do Trigonometry, because it at least had logical answers.

The next summer (or maybe later that same summer?) I went back to camp and I watched Monty Python & The Holy Grail with some of the older kids. I laughed and laughed and laughed. I'm still laughing.
  • I accepted Jesus into my heart at bible camp when I was 9, and at the encouragement of my counsellor, announced it to my cabin-mates. To actually believe that a 9 year old is capable of such a decision is sick, and encouraging it is fucking mental abuse.

I get shivers thinking of what I might have been if I hadn't actually grown a brain of my own.

It really is sick. Kids really don't reach the level of consciousness to make such decisions until (if I recall correctly from my psych classes) early teens- certainly not at elementary school ages. Same thing is true with pledging allegiance. What does that mean to a little kid? Nothing. It's brain washing.
