...Pretty badass !

Just started listening to them recently, don't know why I didn't find out about them sooner. They got this funky hard rock sound going on...very good...and I heard their great live also

Any fans out there ? and if not it probably wouldn't hurt checking them out

All I have is the live at the 9:30 dvd, looking to start my collection on some of their other material.

Any favorites?

Run out and buy the self titled album and Blast Tyrant immediately!
Yes they are good live but they were better around 7-8 years ago. Too predictable live now.

One of my favorite bands and they still bring it live. I agree the self-titled and Blast Tyrant are the best places to start. Huge fan of Beale Street, too. Dive in head first...you won't be disappointed.

Seriously. Those two albums turned up really loud will cure what ails you.
Once you are done with those, I would suggest the rest of their albums in the following order...

    Elephant Riders
    Robot Hive/Exodus
    From Beale Street to Oblivion
    Pitchfork and Impetus EPs
    Slow Hole To China
    Transitional Speedway League
    Jam Room
    Strange Cousins From The West

I mean seriously...does it get more badass than this?

I'm currently wearing my Clutch Elephant Riders Tour 1998 shirt right now. It's the one and only time I've seen them live, they opened for Megadeth.

They are one of my all time favorites. The Elephant Riders has always been my favorite, I think just because that's when I started listening to them but From Beale Street to Oblivion is right up there with it.

Saw them at ACL on the same stage as pj (think they were the 2nd band to go on), and was really impressed. Very good. Another band I was eager to see from reccomendations on this board.

  • Clutch is a great great band. It took me a long long time to get into them, but I'm glad I did.

So it's not just me on Strange Cousins From the West? As many times as I've listened to that record, I just can't get into it like all the others.

    Same with me so far.

My favorites are Jam Room and From Beale Street to Oblivion.

Strange Cousins is just generic to me. Nothing really stands out. I'm not one of these people who hates everything new that they put out because they won't play "Binge and Purge" live but Strange Cousins is just a bland album. That being said, it is still very far from being un-listenable and isn't terrible by any means.
To be honest, I wish they would take a small break. I've been listening and going to see these guys for a very long time and they seem to be in a bit of a rut the last 2-3 years. I mean they are playing 45 minutes from my house tonight in a town where they always sell out but instead of headlining, they are opening for Flogging Molly. Flogging Molly? What the hell is that about? Give me 2 hours of Clutch not 30-40 minutes of Clutch followed by the light beer version of Irish Drinking songs.

And c'mon All Those Yesterdays...10001110101 is nowhere near as badass as The Promoter. ;)

I think you totally nailed it. Their last few albums and tours were at a furious pace and I've had to see them open for Motorhead and Coheed and Cambria. (Probably another thread, but I'd like to go on record as believing the mystique of Motorhead is far better than Motorhead.) I will always see them when they come around to headline, but 2004-2008 was definitely a peak. I still think they can reinvent themselves and start blowing it out again.

Yeah really, how much money can they be making opening for Motorhead, Coheed and Cambria, Flogging Molly and Thin Lizzy? Take some time off, sink yourselves into a new record that isn't written piece-meal while touring, and lets get this thing kicking again with a legitmate headlining tour for a new album.
I mean, I saw these guys several years ago in this shithole bar in Youngstown, OH before Blast Tyrant even came out (they were still playing the demo versions from Blast Tyrant like "Cattle Car"). They absolutely demolished the place. I think I lost ten pounds and chipped a tooth, but it was by far one of the best shows I've ever seen. However, the last few times I've seen them it's like they are slightly burnt out and going through the motions. How many times can you play "Can't Stop Progress" and "Power Player". How many times do we need to hear "50,000 Unstoppable Watts"? I don't know if they still do this or not, but they used to rotate who did the setlist each night. It doesn't seem like they do that much anymore because the sets are pretty similar from one night to the next. Clutch is and always will be one of my all time favorite bands but they need to take a short break and come back with something strong.

Didn't realize that about the setlists...that's awesome. Saw them on that same tour in Northampton, MA...Mastodon actually opened for them. Both bands crushed...it was the second time I had seen Clutch and I was all in after that. The peak for me was February 08...they played two nights at the Middle East in Cambridge. They played a ton of different songs and spanned their entire catalog really well. I agree that most of the shows I've seen since them have been really good, but lacked some oomph. I think the turn they took from Pure Rock Fury to Blast Tyrant really gave them a charge. I hope they start writing some stuff that can capture that magic again. Man does Abraham Lincoln bring a show to a grinding halt...

Yeah 1st time I saw them was in 2001. Back then it was a total crap-shoot on what they might play live. I saw them one night where they played all but one song from the Impetus EP. When was the last time they played anything from that EP?
I personally think things have gone down hill since they booted Eric Oblander from Five Horse Johnson (who had been touring with them and playing harmonica) and Mick Schauer (keys) in 2008. I saw them several times with those two and they absolutely smoked! The keys really fattened up songs like "Big News 1" (if you haven't heard it, check out Live From Flint, MI) and the harmonica on songs like "Electric Worry" and "Brazenhead" really made them come to life. Ever since those guys have been gone, the live shows have kind of flat-lined a bit. For instance, this song is one of my favorites and totally rocked live. They don't play it anymore because they don't have Eric to play the harp...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xno6MXcNdIw

I'll never stop going to see them but they need to find whatever has been missing live for the last couple years and bring it back.

Also...for you newbies to the mighty C!, you might want to check out The Bakerton Group, The Company Band, and Five Horse Johnson (especially "The Mystery Spot" album which JP Gaster plays on).

I doubt it will be available by PJ20. They are having a launch in DC on Aug 29th. I am dying to get my hands on this stuff. Not only is it Clutch beer but it's right up my alley in the way of being dark and heavy!

Well, I'll be in California third week of September, so hopefully by then. If not, I'll be putting a bunch of friends to work.
