Just graduated a few months ago, still jobless :-\

I know it's a long shot but if anyone in the DC, NY, or Chicago area knows of any full time job opportunities please forward me some info!
I graduated with a BA in Communications with a concentration in Journalism and a Minor in Sport Communication...Would love to work for a sport network, franchise, or media outlet. I would be interested in a public relations, advertising, or marketing job as well.

Thanks guys

Applied for a job there today actually. Assistant Director for Athletic Operations...sounds big but the qualifications was looking for someone who just graduated for an entry job making around 35k.

As for the journalism major...I know....IT SUCKS. Gotta figure something out though.

look into the internship program of newspapers. Most of those are paid and for people right out of college.

as far as sports go... you are much better off going into a different career path, round yourself out.... then jump into the sports realm if you want.

Entry level jobs in sports (especially) are long hours, low pay.... and everyone wants them. They burn people up at $25K a year and 70 hours a week. When they burn out, there are 100's of people who think they want the position.

It will be easier to bypass that entry level crunch which consumes about 99.9% of those trying to get into sports if you get good experience, and watch and wait for the right job and right opportunity.

I would agree as someone in sports. I started out doing overnights 5 PM-4AM as a wire service editor, then made it a side job by covering games for the same company while working. I see the PR people from teams daily and for a Yankee game if you work there, you might be there from 9 AM-midnight.

ugh. I worked in baseball awhile and that was the worst.

A long homestand was like a death march. Youre right. 9AM until midnight.... every day. Plus working all day during the weekends because there are games.

what did you do in baseball? I love baseball but would never want to do that. I'd much rather do something in baseball like broadcast support (being the stat guy or something like that) and hold a day job.

I started out as a Marketing intern for nothing and did that for 2 years. Then I had a sales job which pretty quickly I realized it would lead to nowhere.

Then I worked in the NFL in Marketing/Merchandise. I was the only person I knew who I graduated with, who cracked into a Major pro sports team. The job was 60-70 hours and a lot of labor. The job was constantly held over my head.... because many people would be happy to take it if I faltered or quit.

After a few years, I got tired of having to work more than any of my friends and making a lot less money. The NFL job wasnt really leading anywhere I wanted anyways. I branched out to other fields and am happy I did. I couldnt really enjoy football while I worked in it. I would much rather be a fan and enjoy sports.... and have enough money for season tickets.

Spot on. I did group sales for the Sixers/Flyers for 6 months and marketing for about 8 months. Brutal.

I worked 8 months for MLB in London in my first senior year at Ithaca, and they wanted to hire me back. I said no and took up a career telling kids to do what I did get the hell out of dodge. At Towson we have a handful of students who have made it anywhere mostly in low-level college athletics.
  • I'm not talking about working for ESPN or a major sport network (although I have family working high up in ESPN). This is working for a university.

I'm assuming you've tried working something out with your family in ESPN? Even for a bottom-of-the-ladder type position just to get your foot in the door?
    7/2/06 - Denver, CO
    6/12/08 - Tampa, FL
    8/23/09 - Chicago, IL
9/28/09 - Salt Lake City, UT (11 years too long!!!)
    9/03/11 - East Troy, WI - PJ20 - Night 1
    9/04/11 - East Troy, WI - PJ20 - Night 2

Yeah but even their internships require 2 year prior internship experience. ESPN is a job to look for when I already have experience under the belt.

    Thanks for the advice everyone.

Good luck to all the other recent or soon to be graduates!

I'm plowing my way through the 750 page ESPN book right now. Their current president started with them in the mail room. Pretty crazy
