What Rick Perry fans won't talk about...

Perry has taken an increasingly antiscience turn in his approach to governing. On global warming he now says that the leading source of "supposedly deadly carbon dioxide" is the mouth of Al Gore.
On education he has appointed creationists to lead the Texas State Board of Education. And on the issue of sex ed in Texas, Perry has taken governing positions that affect millions of children based on his own personal opinions, even when those opinions are overwhelmingly contradicted by the evidence.
Texas lawmakers cut sex ed from two six-month courses to a single unit of "abstinence only" education. But early indications showed that the program wasn't working. In fact, teens in almost all high school grades were having more sex after undergoing the abstinence only program. By 2007, Texas had the highest teen birth rate in the nation.
Instead of providing fact-based information, the programs use fear and Jesus -- over-emphasizing the risks of sexually transmitted diseases leading to cervical cancer, radical hysterectomy and death, together with Christian morality.
One Texas public school district's sex ed handout is entitled "Things to Look for in a Mate:"
I. How they relate to God
A. Is Jesus their first love?
B. Trying to impress people or serve God?
Ya know... 'Cause that's gonna stop teenagers from having sex...

Not only is Texas' teen pregnancy rate 50% above the average for the country, but the REPEAT teen pregnancy levels are way up, too. Teenagers have expressed the opinion that "birth control doesn't work, why bother using it?"
Perry, however, ignores his failure and instead insists that it works, despite all evidence of the contrary.
"It works. Maybe it's the way it's being taught, or the way it's being applied out there, but the fact of the matter is it is the best form of -- uh -- to teach our children."
When asked for any statistic to suggest it works, Perry says that "I'm just going to tell you from my own personal life, abstinence works."
It is terrifying when you are too stupid to know who is dumb

This was about 3 years ago. I was working for a different studio as a production assistant. My job would include driving the guys around to get clothes or hair cuts, take them for lunch or just keep them busy while scenes were being shot elsewhere.
I was driving around three guys when out of nowhere, one asked a question about birth control. Now... I know that's an odd question to ask someone whose job is making all-male adult movies and isn't a healthcare professional. I'm kinda used to it, but this time was a bit different. He seemed vaguely nervous and maybe like he'd been holding that in.. didn't know where to turn to for information.
I gave him a very frank and rather blunt answer. The other guys in the car listened very intently and then sheepishly started to ask questions of their own. Before long, we'd had a very long discussion about safer sex, STD prevention, birth control and even sexual orientation.
This was the first time they'd ever been in a situation where they could have a very frank, open and judgement-free conversation about sex and sexual topics. Kinda sad they had to sign on to make their first porn movies at 18 to have access to that information. Before that their only "sex ed" was "abstinance-only."
And considering what they were in town doing, I'm going to say those lessons failed (these weren't gay guys, by the way... they were all straight).
The point of the story is that if you don't arm kids with the facts, they're going into battle unarmed whether you like it or not.
If I didn't know better, I would think this was a joke. I feel a little sick. Thanks for posting this.

It won't stop any volcanoes from erupting, that's for sure.
I guess we shouldn't consider the effect of solar and cosmic activity and the well-recognized 800-year global heating and cooling cycle, which keep happening, despite our completely insignificant efforts to affect climate change.
it's cool, you keep using two squares of toilet paper and driving a Prius. That will help.
I use the shower curtain and a camel...save the planet man.
After your shout out thank you on The Porch we know you're not a jerk. Cover blown.
Oh please.
It's not volcanos that have deposited a garbage patch twice the size of Texas in the Pacific Ocean and it's not volcanos that have spilled millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf. Our efforts to slow our damage to the earth are not "insignificant" and even if you ARE one of those people who think that the hole in the ozone just happened to appear for no reason and that the last 15 years being the hottest on record is just some 800-year cycle, going after Al Gore like that is just being a bully.
And that's coming from me.
No, actually, it won't. Maybe trying to curb the amount of pollution we pour into the oceans, the air and the food supply might, though. But that won't make Perry's backers in the oil industry any money. So don't expect him to do anything but make snide comments about Al Gore.
Now would you like to address his obvious love of pregnant teenagers?
Ah... another "I was for it before I was against it" politician. Must be nice to be able to change your mind when you no longer need someone to get elected, eh?
And he was hintin at not even preaching at hi's own event he knows he will start to look just like all the other nut jobs on the bill ...What a douche
Still waiting to hear your defense of his position promoting teen pregnancy.
I mean... does he just want more poor, single moms? Does the wife not put out enough?
And as you can see... I really did choose the right title for this thread.
OK.
I guess some things are so retarded even the conservatives can't defend them.
Next.
