ALS can suck it...

So after 4 years of suffering, immensely in the past year, my good friend and commute buddy, Dave, passed yesterday... Father of 3 and 46, avid music fan... He started getting tremors when he and I would commute to NYC together... And I was stunned when the diagnosis came... He worked until the end and was always positive... 4 years worth of declining health from a cane to wheel chair to bed ridden.... But always with a smile.... His kids spent a ton of time with him which I hope they will always remember...

So I hope everyone here appreciates the luck of the draw they have and enjoy the life they lead... A man who knew he was doomed lived all his limited days to the max... We should all do that..

So sorry to hear about your friend, man. We lost my Dad to ALS...and it hurts every single day. He passed away six months after his diagnosis...he battled just like your friend did. Thoughts & prayers are with you & his friends & family. There are support groups out there...I could gather some info for you or his family if you'd like.

I suggest everyone watches "The last lecture" by Professor Randy Pausch.

In 2007 when Randy knew he had only months to live, he was asked to give his "Hypothetical Last Lecture" this would be for real.

It's truly an amazing lecture, and people can learn a thing or two about enjoying what you have, and how you can help others.

hugs to you, BD. I'm sorry about your friend.

My husband's uncle died of Lou Gehrig's Disease (is that the same thing?) he died within 3 mos. he asked God to take him and he died the next morning.

    take care.

yup. it's the same thing. some people live with the disease for years, some for mere months. the progression varies with each patient. there is no "rough estimate" at all...and there is no cure...yet!

I'm sorry for the loss of your friend, BD, and that he was stricken with such a terrible illness. I think his friendship and the time you spent with him must have been a real gift to you. May he rest in peace.

I agree, we should all try to "live until we die." In the 90s I spent 5 years working with people who were terminally ill and they taught me much more about living than dying.

This is terrible news Adam and I am sorry to hear it. 46 is WAY too young to be passing away. Hopefully his family can find peace in due time.

So sorry to hear rhis BD.

Someone so young dying is so hard, my brother-in-law died of cancer at 45, it seems so very unfair.

Thinking of you and Daves family.
