Just Saw Matisyahu with Toots and the Maytals last night at he Congress Theater in Chicago. Have always liked this guy since Live at Stubbs 1, but never seen him. Holy shit what a fun show it was.
First- holy crap this is Metal meets Rap meets Reggae meets Ska- yes I knew this, but after the sonic assault of guitar and that infernal bass on the keyboard that bombarded me till nauseau, I can only thank God for ear plugs.
He opened with Darkness into Light and this would have made any metal fan happy
I never expected him literally pulling an Ed and backing up 10 feet and jumping onto the crowd for a nice 15 second surf ride. I was stunned, not expecting it at all, but he played it masterfully, he sort of clears the stage path he'll take get security on cue and looks over the rail at first, then he steps back and I was just thinking holy shit this bearded/braided mofo is gonna fucking jump....yep, crowd went wild. It is at the end of the third video clip, last 30 seconds
not a guy you would think is a madman on stage, and he works the entire stage from corner to corner!
Only negative was the bass was just too intense, the rattle your bones to the core type. I hate the congress theater's acoustics as every show I attend there the volume is jacked so high.
His dancing was entertaining as well.
his band was great too
I recommend him if you get the chance
a few utube- his mad encore:

the opener (blew me away) went from this guy to a crowd surfing long jumper...)
