I really dont know. Its a tough call, and he even said if it comes down to it, he'll just have to pay it. The Yankees, and Jeter, are in no way obligated to help him out, although it would be amazing if they helped cover the taxes somehow. But the student loans thing shouldnt be handled by them.MSG II 5/21/10

that is what I was thinking, but I still think you can get taxed for a gift valuing over 25000 I could be wrong though. I sure hope they figure it out for the guy, and jesus christ, how much are season tickets to the f'n yankees...that’s right! If all the released stories are correct, the Yankee organization voluntarily compensated Lopez with jester of gifts. Lopez didn’t ask for, nor did he get to pick and chose what was given to him. His requests were to meet Jeter, a photo with Jeter, and a couple of signed baseballs, none of which has any value unless Lopez tries to sell them. The rest appear to be gifts from the Yankee organization to an unselfish fan and should be treated as such for income tax purposes.SIN EATERS--We take the moral excrement we find in this equation and we bury it down deep inside of us so that the rest of our case can stay pure. That is the job. We are morally indefensible and absolutely necessary.0

The government will tax him, without doubt. The new American "slippery slope" rule of law will overrule common sense.
Luckily, The High Life has enough money and common sense to offset our retarded new-age ideology.
