Spinoff from the Nutshell thread, but also inspired by a discussion between me and a friend.

If you had to choose which would it be...Here are the rules...

you can attend a reasonable amount of shows every years and you get soundboard quality boots of the shows you attend, but you have to throw your studio albums out.

or

You keep your studio albums and any mass released live albums to enjoy for the rest of your days, but can't ever see a show again.

that's a pretty sick and cruel proposal. i would hate it if it were real. but i'm gonna have to go studio and be pissed off that i can't see anymore shows for the rest of my days.

I'm not sure I could choose one of those scenarios, but if your real question is whether we prefer studio to live versions of songs then I'd have to say it definitely depends on the band. Some bands play their live shows just like the studio recordings and don't change things up at all not even extended solos or intro/outros and some rework the songs until they are unrecognizable or play medleys. These are the extremes and I don't prefer either. I like it when I can easily recognize the song and can sing along but I also like it when they play some extended solos or improvise some of the lyrics, or slow things down a little.

For most of my everyday listening pleasure I prefer the studio versions. When I listen to live tracks I usually like to listen to the full show. I rarely just listen to a random mix of live tracks. I like for them to flow like a real show.

    Live. Nothing beats live music.

**Can I make a caveat for The Beatles catalog?
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V

    Wow, that's a tough one.

I think I'd take the proposal for live music though. While I enjoy studio music, I just think that there is nothing like live music.

Now, if I can't own any more studio albums, can I at least listen to new released ones... that way when I go see a band that is supporting new material, I'll actually be familiar with it??

To quote Neil Young from the song Union Man: Live Music is Better

"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

studio. bands die and break up
  • easy answer. live shows and boots. now, if it was just live music and no music to listen to outside of a live setting, THAT would be a tough one.

judging from my intense collection of bootlegs and my addiction to dimeadozen.org, i'd have to go with live.

easy. live. i think studio>live performances most of the time because i'm a stickler for perfection but never seeing a show again? no way. i could just listen to boots and pretend a particular mix of live songs that were exceptional is a studio album. i neeeedssss my live showsssss... the precioussssssssssssss....
