I saw an interview with Eddie and Tomas Young where I believe he said that the song was written for and about Tomas after he spoke to him about what his life is like now. I could be wrong but I thought it was used in the documentary that Phil Donahue did about the war. Anywho Ed said it was an extremely difficult song to write. I may be totally off base but it might be so personal it's too emotionally draining for him to play. This is just speculation on my part and I completely agree it is a really beautiful song and would really love to hear it done live as well.
