MSG 1 2010... BALLS.

I've revisited the night 1 and night 2 debate. It seriously seems to me that, night 1, they came out... no frills... just fucking rocked the place, balls to the wall. Night 2, more of a "novelty" night. Sort of like Philly 3 and 4... night 3 I loved much better, while night 4 was unique and had some rarities. You cannot deny this 5/20/10 show. It is absolutely amazing... one of the very best. Give it another listen and get off night 2.

Respectfully disagree. The crowd was into it but didn't go balls to the wall on the show until Love Reign O'er Me. I think a lot of that had to deal with a somewhat choppy main setlist, if that makes sense.

Listened to both many times and was at both shows, still favour night 2, I think they were on fire and the crowd was electric.

Your post is still very cool, I'm glad you're having this revelation. It sounds like the feeling I got when I realized what an awesome show night 2 was and, holy shit, I WAS THERE!!!
  • AGREED...to an extent.

Night 2 was better BUT Night 1 was still unbelievable.

The way they came out was ON FIRE:
Sometimes (the whole crowd has a big part) - Breakerfall (first time seeing it live i went crazy) - Last Exit -Animal

Unthought Known was better Night 1 then Night 2 and the way it went into DTE was GREAT.

Night 2 was better but to me it was just a massive show with a 20 hour break.

People forget about MSG 2 2003 too, I thought it was WAY better than "live at the garden"

Agree. Msg 1 was awsome but they should have closed better.. Ed always says The best show is the one before the last show of a tour
  • Listen to Newark again might be better than both nights at MSG I went to all three

I've not listened to MSG1 for a while, I'll have to give it another go. I was all over MSG2 because of Lukin II but my thoughts on MSG2 are is that its a great gig until Black Red Yellow gets played. Then Sweet Lew and in these two songs the momentum of the gig went. And never came back. Thats what I get when listening to that boot.

But its been a while since I listened to both. I'll have to give them both some airing next week!

I am so upset reading this I really wanted to make it to the second night and ended up missing it...I had a blast when I was at the first night it was a great set and great energy. But when I look at the set list for the second night I get so upset there were A LOT of really cool songs played that night and the fact that I missed Hunger Strike KILLS me I always thought that be really cool to see performed. But O well...I still haven't listened to it on CD for some reason when I haven't heard certain songs live in person I don't want to listen to them on CD first I rather wait and hopefully see them so I can get the full experience of not knowing what they might do live but that's just my preference.

good thread... was at both... Night 1 was good... the problem for me with night 1 is that it felt alot like the Hartford show I had been to a few nights earlier... but great setlist, great energy, great crowd

    the problem with that is...

NIGHT 2 - SPECTACULAR SET, SPECTACULAR CROWD ... just amazing all the way around... it was just 1 of those shows... ive been lucky enough to see a few of these now... you felt it from the beginning... you really did... people were just ready to go nuts... and so was the band... BREATH early in the set i think was a small message from the band that they were really in it... the sing along during NOTHINGMAN was the crowd sending the same message back ...then you get to LUKIN 2... which just for the fact of thinking about how crazy LUKINFAN was going at that point was enough to really appreciate it! haha... then you get to HUNGERSTRIKE... i dont know , it was just one of those nights... and last night of US tour...

Night 1 felt like I was at a great Concert... Night 2... honestly... felt like CHURCH, it had a lasting effect...

I say NIGHT 2... but im glad i was at both of them!

Im more on board with the argument that Philly Night 3 may have been better than Philly Night 4.... but once again, just glad to say I saw both...

MSG is one of the greatest places in the world to see a concert. I have seen many other bands there. NOTHING IS LIKE A PEARL JAM SHOW!! NOTHING! The person who described it as church has it right.
All shows have their own little gems in them.
The crowd was awesome both nights. I am a little partial to night 1. Down has been on my "wishlist" for a really long time. Whenever PJ comes to town it is amazing!

I was at MSG 1, and I guess that's the only one of the two I'm qualified to comment on... but I was blown away by that show. I kept looking at my wife through each of the first 5 or 6 songs, and I kept saying "holy sh*t, they came to ROCK tonight..." The first blast of songs were so heavy... and hearing LROM was amazing - I'd seen them play that once before, at the VH1 Rock Honors show, but there was something awesome about it at MSG, maybe it was having the crowd scream along the way they did... I also saw LA2 and LA3 (w the Cornell version of Hunger Strike) from this tour, and those 3 shows put together were a hell of a combo...

Speaking of the MSG crowd, that's one thing that was so cool about the show, too - we came from L.A., and so we're not quite as used to the "shaking-the-whole-building" kind of crowd, and I loved that about MSG - and then something hit me... none of these people have to drive home! Everybody can drink 3 or 4 tall beers, and then just get into a cab or on a train to go home! No wonder they're such great crowds! In L.A. we've all got to get in our cars and drive home, so at least a third of the audience (hopefully) are designated drivers... not as much singing and dancing from the stone-cold sober folks...

I was @ MSG 1 and been to quite a few shows since 2003 and this for me was fuckin quite a night maybe the best for me The garden faithful were ready and we did not dissapoint . I have to Agree with others that seeing PJ is like chruch. I realize now however i have to get MSG 2 i may have missed slow lukin @ MSG but just saw ED do it @ the beacon which was Amazing as was the whole show. Wish there was a boot for it

I agree that MSG 1 was a better show, then MSG 2(performance wise IMO). I know i prefered Sometimes opener to a Corduroy opener. I know i didn't hear one request for Corduroy as a opener, before the show. Also like the Indifference closer to YL.

Though Breath was early in the main set, i thought they played it just OK, and EV messed up the lyrics a little(is it me or does EV mess that up quite often?> ) The main sets were pretty close, but i'll take a I Got Shit(MSg 1) to PMPM(MSG 2)(just doesn't come across live IMO).

MSG 1 encore -1(You Are, LROM, SOLAT,Once, PORCH!,) was so much better then MSG 2(BRY,Sweet Lew?, GTF, STBC, RVM). Though the RVM version at MSG 2 was really good.

Hunger Strike was awesome, but I Believe In Miracles was so much better then Kick Out The Jams. And like i said, Indifference is a GREAT closer. I'll take that at EVERY show over YL.

Well, with all that being said, i thought Newark was BETTER then BOTH MSG shows, so what do i know>

i went to both 1 and 2. msg 2 is the show that i always go back to wishing i could re-live, which basically means thats the better show. even set list regulars like better man, given to fly, and alive all seemed to have extra emotion and definitely up there with the best versions of the songs ever. the rarities they played also made it special, lukin 2, black red yellow, hunger strike - i mean i could never have guessed id see those live. only if they used a real opener like release, long road, or oceans it would easily be a show never to be topped.

this is not to take away from msg 1 which was an awesome show in its own right. i think right after they started off with sometimes breakerfall last exit and animal it kind of died out. someone mentioned a choppy set list and i totally agree with that although love reign over me and i believe in miracles were great to see. i did like newarks show a few days before a little bit better than msg 1 as well, that show had a such a great set list and while the crowd wasnt as good i still enjoyed it thoroughly. msg 2 you can just sense the feeling around the building as it was the last US show, the place just rocked.

msg 2 for me was my favorite show, even better than all of the philly shows

I wasn't at any of the shows. But have listened to the boots numerous times.
Overall Night 2 is the Best boot, but i have to agree with the fact that BRY and sweet Lew kills momentum. (sweet Lew being the worst song in the PJ songbook along dirty frank)

yes i absoultely agree msg 1 and 2 were better than spectrum 3 and 4. someone mentioned the newark show; i thought the band was on fire but it was definitely the worst crowd i have ever been a part of. it 's like the whole arena all most wanted to explode but just didn't until go was played.

and the momentum at msg 2 never let down! I agree that sweet lew did drag some of the energy out but the next three songs were given to fly, spin and rvm! then encore 2 with betterman and black!!! I just remember turning to my buddy and saying that this show was insane! You had the perfect mix of a crazy intense singalong crowd and a band on fire. MSG 2 definitely is up there in my top 5 favorite pj shows.

I'm done comparing these two... I've relived them both through bootlegs and in my mind time after time again, and what I have concluded was that they were two radically-different feeling nights that amounted to one superb MSG 'experience' when put side-by-side. I loved each and every second of both nights, and think that they ought to be listened to starting with night one, and ending with night two! I would also like to suggest that people seek out a quality AUD version of the shows for the TRUE MSG experience - because without the crowds, it's just two awesome shows. But then add the crowds, and they are both out of this world.

    There for both nights.
Both great set lists, both great shows with great crowds- ALWAYS a great PJ crowd at MSG.
BUT night 2, I don't know, there was just something in the air that night. The moment you walked
into the building you felt it, everyone was pumped. Maybe it was because it was the last night of the US leg,
I don't know, but that place was ROCKIN!! Definitely one of the best shows I have ever been to.

I agree with you about Newark, the band was on the money but the crowd just didn't
know what to do with themselves. At the end of the show, guy next to me says "well you seem to have
enjoyed yourself", I looked at him completely confused and said, "It's Pearl Jam".
And those were 10c seats

Hey! to each his own(with a couple saying that the MSG shows were better then Philly 3 & 4), but i don't get that> : Maybe you're letting the crowd sway you with the MSG shows ? N.Y.? Does the MSG shows get the same feedback, if those SAME shows were played else-where?

BOTH were great shows, but MSG 1 was my favorite of the 2.

someone mentioned that they didn't close strongly with night 1... i agree, they could have closed a little stronger but, i mean, they used their stock closers that rip (ex: RVM) for the second night. night one first set was amazing... seems like they were like "well, fuck... we have to save something for tomorrow night" and the 2nd set got shorted.

but, again, all things considered... 2 different nights, both amazing in their own right.

p.s. philly 3 and 4 were both amazing as well in their own right. these were probably 4 of the best shows ever. glad to have seen them.

can alpine top or equal any of these 4? stay tuned....

Ya kind of interesting 2 compare the Msg shows to the last 2 spectrum.... I was lucky enough to be at all 4 of them... I would say MSG 2 was as good as either spectrum show... hard to pick a winner Tho.. IMO the 2 spectrum shows and MSG 2 are 3 of the greatest concerts in the history of Rock n Roll as far as I'm concerned
