Anybody own this model?

I have a friend who wishes to liquidate his giant equipment collection, part of which is this bass (not THIS actual one, to clarify). It seems like a steal at the price he's asking - $500 - and I've owned a modified Mexican P Bass for many years, but the price disparity between this and other American P Basses confuses me. I can't find any big diffences in the quality or features, aside from the Candy Apple Red finish being the only color choice in the Specials.

Any suggestions?

The American Special guitars are great from what I've played (couple teles and a strat), if ya dig it, I'd say go for it!
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V
  • I am a P-bass guy, I just don't have any experience with the Specials. But it appears they are over $900 new (with a gig bag? WTF) on Musiciansfriend web site.
