Anybody care to recommend to me some good soul music? Or at least give me a good place to start on exploring the genre?

Listening to my current collection of Al Green, James Brown, Sharon Jones, and the new release from Charles Bradley makes me want some more...

Marvin Gaye is the man, also Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett are classic.

Maybe a little more on the funk/psychedelic side, but Shuggie Otis is incredible.

There's a nice compilation on Luka Bop (David Byrne's label).

Otis Redding is the master in my book.
Also quite partial to Ray Charles.
Groups like the Temptations, Impressions etc. as well
    Sam and Dave
Dobie Gray...never did a lot but good stuff

I feel like I'm skipping someone that hasn't been mentioned yet.....

I'll echo the above sentiments of both Otis Redding and Sam Cooke. I also LOVE Curtis Mayfield.

That's the one who slipped my mind.

    Bill Withers also.

Might technically labeled blues, but it's hard to find anybody with more soul than Bobby Blue Bland

As for the ladies, Aretha Franklin is certainly the Queen Of Soul.

Plus some more Motown for you: Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, The Supremes, Martha and The Vandellas.

    Early Hall & Oates.

Sorry. Go easy on me, it's a guilty pleasure... :geek:

Solomon Burke, Edwin Starr, and Jerry Butler should be checked out too.

I like this guy a lot too. Put on a great live show. Little more bluesy, but has got some serious soul for a white guy. :)

  • Some of you may disagree but the new Cee Lo Green album is dripping with soul. Especially if you can find some of the non-album tracks like ChamPain and Please.

The essential: Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, and of course Marvin Gaye

Etta James needs to be on the list, and also Bettye Lavette.

Also, I check this blog out on an irregular basis. There's always something good, be it funk or soul.

Second the recommendations for Marvin, Aretha, Smokey, Otis, Sam & Dave, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Curtis Mayfield. I also recommend The Staple Singers.
