yes, bringing back 33,000 after a surge is the beginning of a drawdown.

it can't happen fast enough for me, but we are on the way out of there.

not to mention, this shit would have been over LONG ago had we not taken a voluntary detour into iraq...

Cheers to Obama on this. I hope it actually happens, and I hope he decides to bring the rest of them home ASAP.

glad to see that we agree on this one VG. this should not be a partisan issue, but some people want to make it one. and i find that unfortunate...

i would like to think that any reasonable person on either end of the political spectrum would see it that way.

not fast enough. The troops should have been home by the end of 2009, not 2014.

There is no reason to be there, and it doesn't matter when we leave; within a few years things will be "back to normal" in Afghanistan. The Taliban will be back in control and Al-Qaeda will return. Five years of "military aggression" will not cure the minds of the Afghan population. If anything, things could have been "made right" in their eyes if Obama would have been elected and said "sorry for our policies over the past 50 years or so, we understand why you're angry with us and the rest of the Western world, we'll be leaving now for good and hope you forgive us."
Everything not forbidden is compulsory and eveything not compulsory is forbidden. You are free... free to do what the government says you can do.
  • I think that if we REALLY want to "support the troops" that we should bring them all home before any more of them get hurt or killed... Make sure they never are homeless, in need of medical or mental health care... make sure that they know we appreciate the sacrifices they made.

As a lot of you know, I work in porn. Gay porn, to be exact. I'm a director.

I've worked with a LOT of former military guys who returned to America without any safety net at all. One guy had shrapnel wounds all over his body and face. A lot of them tell me they return severely depressed and don't know how or where to ask for help. I mean, they're asking ME... that's how few places they have to turn.

One guy, on the first day we worked together, proudly told me "a marine adapts to any situation" and then proceeded to "adapt" to life at home by becoming a drug addict with extreme bouts of depression and anger. He's now in jail because he used his special marine fighting skills to attack two guys at a bar over a pool game. He's someone who could have really made a contribution to his community... he was a good guy.. but being taken from his small town at 18, whisked to a country where everyone wanted to kill him and the brought back and dropped on the curb side... it was just too much for him to handle.

Yeah, I wish it was possible to just bring everyone home today with the wave of a magic wand.

But it's not. Pulling out too fast could be catastrophic and our president knows that. I just hope that we as Americans can try to do our part helping the returning troops re-assimilate back into our communities.

We're not all that different. We all share pretty similar goals. It's the implementation that differs.

  • One other thing...

People ask me all the time why straight men would have gay sex on camera for a living. It's hard to explain to people out of the industry but let me tell you a story.

One guy I worked with was... well, he was a very special breed of guy. Stunning body, very handsome, from rural Arkansas, thick accent that kinda sounded like Larry The Cable Guy. Very free spirited and a bit whacky but when he came to my house for Christmas dinner, he wore a nice shirt and called my husband "Sir" until my husband said "No... call me Carlo... we're all friends here."

I asked him once what made hi get into gay porn. He got very serious and looked down at the floor. He said, "Let's face it... I'm not a genius. My marks in high school were average at best. I couldn't have gotten into a university and my parents couldn't afford to send me if I did... they're barely getting by (this was in about year 7 of the Bush years)."

He said, "I didn't have a lot of options. I could stay in my town and bale hay and muck stalls on a farm like I've been doing since I was 14. I can't do that for the rest of my life. Then a lot of the guys from my home town joined the military as a way to get out and make something of themselves. But they all came back... wrong in the head. They were all fucked up. The guys who were together and everyone looked up to came back with drug problems and drinking problems and we'd hear stories about them waking up screaming every night. I don't want to end up like that."

Then he shrugged and said, "but baling hay for the last 5 years gave me this body and that's my only asset. It's the only thing that's mine that I can use. And if you want to fly me to a mansion in Hawaii where I'll live rent and expense-free, pay me thousands of dollars per month and let me spend my days showing my body on a web cam and laughing, yeah... having sex with guys really isn't so bad when compared to digging a bull out of a pit of shit 3 feet deep or having a bunch of Iraqi people throw bombs at your car."

Then he laughed and said "and this way I can save money and pay for training in something I really want to do with my life."

It's now a few years later and last I heard from him, he'd married a local girl and the two were working as SCUBA instructors in Maui. So... he got a happy ending.

Putting the soldiers who are there in even more danger and making their job that much harder all so he can look good to his Left base during re-election.

Yeah, but you'd say that no matter WHAT he did. If he surged, you'd be crying about that... if he pulled everyone out... you'd cry about that. If he parted the Red Seas and brought Lazarus back from the dead, you'd say "there's another unemployed person to feed!!"

to the people who say he is being too hasty, how long should we stay there? A 13 year war is not long enough? How much longer until it is "finished?"

it is hard to describe something as "finished" when the end goal of the mission was never defined other than the comically non-specific term "war on terror".

when you try to wage a war on a particular tactic of war instead of a particular enemy and without clear goals there is no way you can win a war. you get what we have now, unceremonious withdrawl, thousands maimed and fucked up for the rest of their lives, and a trillion dollars wasted...

And you are an America-hating liberal. We can go all day. But what I think of you, and what you think of me really doesn't matter.

I think the general goal was to "make us safe from the evil terrorists." I never really figured out how killing bearded men in caves in a 3rd world country was achieving that objective, especially when Al-Qaeda is a worldwide organization that is now mostly in Africa and Indonesia.

What has taken place over the past 10 years is this; Americans are SCARED AS HELL for their own security and want the government to do whatever it takes to nerf-pad the world and protect us from scary monsters under the bed, at the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars per year and many lives of poor young boys. In reality, we are all much more likely to be killed by a lightning strike than to die in a terrorist attack. I think the propagation of fear was intentional as it has allowed the military industrial complex and police state (here at home) to become not only necessary, but also COMPULSORY functions of the government.

Will be glad to see my nation ending its excursion into Afghanistan, which loosely translates into "where empires go to bleed to death. I was never on board with this particular aspect of the "War on Terror." Like several of you have stated, our nation's goals in this country were either never clearly defined or properly expressed to the tax-paying public. Such a situation when combined with military action is a quick and easy recipe for disaster.

It appears that many of the Afghani people are content in their current existence, and they do not want their nation built or re-built according to Western standards. They may not even want to participate in the global economy. This is their right as a nation and a people. I do suspect that they are also a very war-weary people. Jimmy Carter was our president when Afghanistan last knew peace.....31 years ago.

I hope for a successful pull-out of the American and Allied troops from this country. Successful in that the loss of life on all sides is kept to a bare minimum.
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.
