What is it to love someone? (non-family, but a life partner)

Is it a self-gift based on sacrifice;
Is it a feeling you 2 are the only ones on earth;
Is it a choice?
It it based in trust; based in shared experiences, based on an unknown?

So many different relationships around me, and the more I see the less I know. The more I define love based on my own experiences the more it seems cliche. When did you know you loved someone?

    I don't think there is any one answer, and certainly not one size fits all. For me, romantic love is being head over heels AND being best friends, stick things out, stick together and work thru the BS. So it's romance and it's work.

    that person is your whole world. you think about them all the time. love also changes. you and the other person need to change together in order stand the test of time. love has peaks and valleys. if you can make it through, you are truely in love. when you love someone it is for better or worse. you will see both, and never leave.

    IMO....love, alone, is never "enough" in and of itself. It needs to be backed up by words and deeds, consistently and always. One must demonstrate their love, on a daily basis.

    This. People can love, but still not treat each other right. Words and deeds should demonstrate the depth of that love.

    I knew it was love very early on, but small things every day keep affirming it.

    Mmmmm, very difficult question.

    With hubby for 24 1/2 years now, with a lot of ups and downs. Don't really know the answer.

    Just know that I still want to be with him through all the good times and the crap, it's been close to edge quite a few times, but we're still hanging in there. I always think though that the time to split is when it's more painful to be with him than without him.

    I think it probably varies from person to person.

    IMO love is not that you can't live without them but that you don't want to.
    When you share a mutual respect with each other.
    When they are the first person you want to tell good or bad news to.
    It's been such a long time since I fell in love that I can't remember when or what it felt like but I do know that getting to spend my life with my best friend is the greatest gift ever :D

    Pretty much what I was going to say...when you see all their faults and still don't kill them (although you may want to at times) :lol:

    For me it's being with someone I truly feel comfortable with...that I can just be me..let my breath out, relax and just be in my own skin. That's when I know.

    When she left our marriage with no indication something was wrong or being willing to try to work through it. Prior to that I honestly SAID I loved her . It just wasnt until it was over did I KNOW I did. Heres why. In spite of the pain of the loss, I still wanted the best for her. Still do in fact. AT this point 2 years removed from that experience,we have friendly convos through FB chat. Still things that need said before I could be in her presence. Brings up the hurt when I am.


    But I grew through and from that. my current relationship is much healthier. We talk TO each other. And really try not to take things so personally.

    I think you know you love someone when you can't imagine your life with out them. Or, more to the point, the idea of life without them is very painful. :?

    yes but family(my children) love encompasses all.. it is safety and trust
    and understanding. Us against the world!

    It is all these and time.
    Time in love is reinforcing, it builds the bond daily.

    I knew I loved someone when I was betrayed at age 7 ... a broken heart is a sure sign of love.
