Dress code/etiquette/general advice for Ed shows?

I will be attending my first EV solo show next month at Benaroya Hall. As I am sure with many other venues that Ed plays in, Benaroya Hall is a fairly new venue, usually with performances and acts that cater to higher income folks. I've never been, but I've been to see the nutcracker at McCaw Hall, where everyone showed up in formal dress. Of course, I don't imagine the Ed shows to be one where we'd have to dress up really formal, but I was hoping to start a thread where people who've been to the Ed shows could give advice for those who are planning on going.

Should I dress casual, or a notch up from casual (polo shirt, etc.)?

I believe there is another thread where people describe their experience meeting Ed. Any pointers on that?

How has the audience noise level been for the 2011 shows? I've heard that some of the audience was rather obnoxious in 2008/09, to the point where Ed wouldn't release any bootlegs to his shows due to that.

Shirts, posters? How do they look?

How have the ten club seats been for the shows so far? I have Ten Club seats, and while I have a higher number, I believe that the EV ten club seats were dispersed randomly rather than by number. Are their any bad seats in the venues that Ed has performed in?

Thanks guys!

go casual dude, i went to a bunch of ed's shows here in oz earlier this year, different venues, same crowd. Jeans and a tee...or whatever you're comfortable in. Crowds were mostly good, listen when you should listen, get rowdy when its appropriate, just respect the man and what he has to say. Merch was cool, easy to get, get in early for posters though. 10C tickets are randomly throughout the venue and the more senior member you are the closer you will be, small venues so all seats were good. its hard to meet ed, you gotta be in the right place at the right time, soundcheck is generally at about 4pm, that or hang around after the gig and maybe get lucky...

enjoy your show, it will be awesome.

This is not the case with the American shows as far as I know. From what my confirmation says and everything else I've seen, it's random and not based on seniority.

I think that's how it was for the Aussie shows too.

Definitely random and not seniority based. At the Boston show I know I had better seats than people that had been in the 10club years longer than I have.

Benaroya Hall was opened in 1998...so it isn't that new.

As far as how to dress....I imagine the range will be everything from casual to dressy. When PJ played there in 2003, some people were dressed nice, but the majority of people were wearing jeans. So I'd say just wear what you want.

Audience noise?....this is Seattle, and in my experience, Seattle crowds tend to be annoyingly chatty. On Friday, I went to see Mark Lanegan's acoustic show at the Neptune Theater...a seated show, just like Ed's show will be. I could hardly hear Lanegan over the dull roar of talking in the audience. I was so pissed. Why would you spend money to go to a show to just talk non-stop?

Benaroya is a great venue and there aren't any bad seats, in my opinion. The sound is fantastic.
  • People actually need advice on how to dress? He is a rock singer and even if it's acoustic, it's still a rock show. Wear what ever you feel like. Do you really need to impress the guy next to you?

Dress code: no shirt, no shoes, no service. Otherwise, wear what you want.

Etiquette: Don't be a douche. No one paid to hear you A) Talk B) Scream song requests C) Scream how much you love Eddie D) Scream just to hear yourself scream

General Advice: See Etiquette. Oh, and try to piss before the show, ok?

  • When Mr. Vedder played Vancouver 2008, I dressed up a bit. Jeans, collared shirt, jacket. The girl in front of me has forced the worst combination of words ever to be uttered in the history of mankind: PINK VELOUR BEDAZZLED NICKELBACK JUMPSUIT. I am still traumatized. I can't believe all those words could even be said together. She also cried (sometimes loudly) throughout most of the show. Can't blame her for being emotional, besides, the sobbing was less distracting than the outfit-that-must-not-be-named.

It's doubtful I'll have a spare 2 hours to get on the El and go to 34th St, walk to the bar, have a couple beers, and take the El back to 69th St.

Don't get me wrong - Tower Theatre is a great venue. Just a shame there's nothing to do around there.

Aussie shows were definitely seniority based, the seats were in random sections but the lower your number the closer you were, all good seats though...

You might want to go to the goods section. You're going to need a few items.
    #1 analog PJ tee shirt
#2 flannel shirt "goes over the top and be sure to tie it in front around your waist".
    #3 Steel tip "black shoes"
    #4 Jeans "shredded lightly"
#5 Here's the biggy if you have short hair then you'll need to shave a Mohawk. If you have long hair than you'll need to pick up a very large scrunchie. If your not sure what color or size. Google some early pics of Stone. He had some choice one's.
Good luck and hope you have a great time at the show. :D:D:D

fair enough man, that was the word we got when we were picking up our tickets from 10c and it seemed that way when we were all comparing our numbers and our tickets...who knows then.

What show were you at? I think there was a fuck up with the brissie shows and seat allocations for the most part seemed to be based on numbers. but the other shows were random, and this is from people who did multiple shows in multiple cities.

In the US I've never seen any difference in dress between EV shows and PJ shows.

I would say etiquette is an issue, though one a handful of asswipes always ignore. It's unbelievable to me the obnoxious and inconsiderate things people yell out. These people are in Ed's fan base? I guess some people are very casual fans. Unlike at a PJ show, you can hear pretty much everything in these small venues. We all know PJ listens to our requests frequently enough as posted in this forum (remember Black Red Yellow at MSG last year?) But Ed doesn't seem to appreciate it when people call out requests in the middle of the solo shows. (Especially when it's 'freebird'. Somebody really didn't find it embarrassing to yell that.)

I think there's a thread somewhere else for stupidest stuff you've heard people yell at an EV concert. For me it was the drunk guy next to me yelling at the top of his voice "my girlfriend is Joey Ramone's cousin!".
