Winding Down

Ok let's face it. The guys are getting older. The band is working on separate projects. An official solo has been done. This tour is short. The last album didn't do as well as previous ones.

Do you think that PJ is winding down? Are we coming to the end of an era? Or do you think they will be like the Stones or Dead and tour well on into their sixties....

I think they're gonna keep touring for awhile. A decent amount of time at least. Not necessarily every year, or 30 shows a tour. But I don't think they're done yet.

The last album has already outsold riot act and binaural..........i believe it has done well over a million copies worldwide. The band is still giving out awesome live shows. I think we still have a solid five years of pearl jam still in the tank.

Whilst it has been a HUGE asset to the band's integrity, longevity and artistic success, the fact that Pearl Jam does not create a lot of publicity may mean that unlike the stones, they mightn't be able to keep on doing big shows indefinitely. I could be wrong though...

...either way, i feel that the band still has a few albums left in them - and excellent ones at that. if theres one thing i've learned about PJ, its that they wont continue with releasing music unless it is at a high level of quality.

so the real question is for how long they can keep creating mindblowingly great music.

i think there's probably another decade in em... although the longer it goes on the longer the times will be between releases - though as i say i do not fear that they will ever put out a poor album.

As long as they are still enjoying making music and touring, I think they will. From everything I've seen they still are; in fact maybe more than they used to. :) I sure am hoping they keep it up!

I've always thought this ... because, there's no reason not to. I don't see any of the things you mentioned as "signs they are winding down."

In fact, they are touring this summer for no reason, no album to support, just because they fuckin' feel like it. To me, that makes a stronger case for "hell, no they're not winding down" than anything else you mentioned.

    amen.

    plus, look at avocado:

    life wasted
    world wide suicide
    comatose
    severed hand
    big wave
    unemployable

^ show that the band can still rock fuckin HARD

    inside job
    army reserve
    marker in the sand
    parachutes
    come back

^ show the band still has amazing musicianship and creativity! (not that the first group doesn't, but i used them for the hard rocking category instead ;))

also, look at their shows. better than EVER. very long, amazing and diverse setlists, ed sounds his best, and the band is always on fire. them doing side projects just show me that they need to stay busy and LOVE STILL making MUSIC. we've definitely got more great albums and bigass tours in store for us. this band is anything but winding down.

I see this post every year since No Code.

Of course this tour is short. Its' just for fun, they have no new reocrd out.

Huge tour in 06 more in 07 and now some in 08. The are keeping very busy.

New album will come out soon and another huge tour will follow.

I stopped reading after this, 5 years

    are you fucking serious

    with the amount of energy

    PASSION

IN THEIR MUSIC, THEY WILL BE DOING THIS TILL THEY ARE 100

I mean whos knows on what scale, but solo stuff ansd side priojects usually mean they miss their band.
    These guys cant sit still,.

I hate to sound rude becasue we are all fans, but when a musician does more and they are IT IS A GOOD SIGN

This tour is without an album, first time ever they did a full scale east coast tour without an album
05 was cools and so was the vfc tour but this is a step in the direction of more

If you look at yield, binaurul, than riot act there was a steady progression in shows

the off years just used to be bridge shows
after riot act we had vfc
than the next year about 6 shows
they did avocado and i was suprised it wasnt a bigger tour rather the same amount with adding europe, i was shocked they didnt come back and here they are with a decent size tour, right after eds solo tour and no album
also ed is so passionate he prob is sending the measage that he missed the band.

and wasnt their just news of another brendan album, so it will be mainstream.

we have had more pearl jam in the last 5 years than we ever have had.
    they will always play

the sad part with this band is god forbid any serious problems they would prob call it quits like zep
    where most other bands dont.
Some people have religion I have Pearl Jam.

    no more shows

I reckon tjey will reamain for a long time, at least till one of them tires of it all.
This tour I believe is to test run some new stuff before they release it on a new album
They are all well of financailly now, the albums might not sell like, vrs/ten etc but they DO Sell well enough to make a profit.
their is still a spark in those old dogs yet

Well Ament said back when they got done with their initial album deal and were about to throw down with J that they were intent on doin things differently in the future...record some, tour some. etc.

They have toured at least a bit for the last 5 years and now they're pulling out a mini tour for this summer. It wouldn't surprise me if they eschewed the year long world tour from now on, seeing as they all have families. They may just do a 'leg' every year....And it wouldn't surprise me if they release their albums themselves from now on. The numbers might not ever hit that Global Pop Culture Hysteria range again, but in keeping all the profits it would still make them a nice chunk of change...and they own their own studio.

All I know is they seem to enjoy playing and creating still and they will always be able to sell out decent sized venues...

I honestly think we have at least a decade of new music and live performances coming from them...but probably not in the typical established methods we've all grown up with.

However, after seeing Springsteen rock it like myth last weekend...I think Eddie needs to toss the smokes now...for real.

But yeah, all their heroes are still goin...I doubt they'll ever stop completely...Then again, Charlie Watts doesn't have to play 'Go' or 'Comatose' either...

    But Still.

    Winding down???

You just described the last 12 years of this bands existance.. not much has changed.. big tour in 2000, big tour in 2003, big tour in 2006 and big tour in 2009 to promote the new album.. You'll see.

I think they will age like Springsteen and Neil Young - in the coolest way possible - continuing to tour when THEY want to and continuing to make music they feel good about, regardless of whether it sells a lot or not. They'll still be a force and have things to say.

    yes.

There are very few bands that get to this point and don't just ride the hits.

Fans not only anticipate but crave new material.

I'm not sure that's even true with Springsteen or Young.
  • don't think they are winding down, don't think they are getting old yet-nearly 2 decades now and better all the time, selfishly hopin they stay around a few more as i'll be retiring in 1 decade and hope to spend more time at shows than my reg av. 2 per yr. appears that they live and love to play which probabaly won't change. csny still touring-even with health issues still put on a great show. just hope they keep creating and keepin it new and fresh, think the solo stuff helps them express all aspects of their art vision even if it might not mesh with the band..that way they are refreshed and ready to create together. here's to hope

5 years or so on the mainstream scale. big tours, big albums, etc....

Another ten years or so of small tours with pj loyalists.
