In both ears...I can hardly hear and certain frequencies are distorted... Anyone had this before? It's driving me insane. Its made me useless at my day job (on the phone most the day)... And I can't play or even really listen to music.

Help. Please.

Since you know its an infection we can assume you've been to the doctor and are taking an antibiotic right?

    After that

what I've found works the best are Similason products. They are all natural, homeopathic ear drops that work wonders as far as I'm concerned. They may cost a dollar or two more than others but are well worth it. They may be "hiding" on the top or bottom shelf in the eye and ear drop section. Usually WalMart and CVS carry them.

On top of that...sudafed or another decongestant will help to clear the congestion in your eustachian tube behind your ears. Not a cough and cold product..just a plain decongestant...I find that sudafed works best.

I've had luck with those two in combination.

    Feel better :D

    what? I can't hear ya!

ok, seriously now...I had ear infections all the time as a kid, the really painful I'm screaming my eyes out pain. If it's severely painful (like somebody shoving an ice pick in your ear) go to the doctor, the fluid isn't draining properly and is causing pressure/pain. Take a warm washcloth, and hold it over your ears..it helps release the pressure. When your eardrum pops, you may have gross fluid that leaks out, your eardrums will heal. Take some tylenol and rest.

    good luck!

  • Thanks for the advice... I went to the doctor last and and the antibiotics did nothing so I went back yesterday and they changed my prescription...hopefully this works. I'm taking sudafed and ibuprofen and I'm still really plugged... I've heard that the warm washcloth thing might make the infection worse so I've be hesitant to do that

Have you tried the Similason drops? I Swear they are the only thing that works for me. I get that infection every spring...so make sure to have the Similason Earache Drops ready to go. Seriously, if you're too sick, you should send someone else out to get them for you. Its worth it.

Sounds crazy, but try saline nasal spray. The salt helps dry out the infection and unclog your ears so you can hear.

    good luck...ear infections are hell

I've had ear problems all my life.
Been hospital 3 times to have grommets inserted to help drain the middle ear.
Had my recent procedure last year and now my ears are back to being unhealthy with the grommets having fallen out. Had a hearing test last month, not good result with the blockage.
I couldn't hear out of my right ear for 2-3 weeks last month, got blocked bad after a cold.
    Still not right.
Been seeing a specialist all my life, last year I was told I was lucky not to have gone deaf after flying in an airplane. The pressure during lift off/descent caused a perforated ear drum. So I need to get the okay from my specialist to fly.

I feel for you. I've had a infection in my left ear since December. I was on a million different antibiotics and drops, then I was sent to a ENT. My ear rings non stop, and the drum in that ear is partially deflated. I've had a CT Scan that showed a deformation in my canal as well. As of Tuesday (that's right 6/14/11) I had a tube put in. So we shall see how that goes.

  • well...after 2 antibiotics and some steroids, I'm still having issues.

Not nearly as much of a plugged up feeling...but I'm experiencing distortion on higher pitched sounds...sometimes to the point where when I listen to music some of it sounds off key.

I called and they're thinking tubes at this point...anyone had them before?...just wanting to know how intense of a precedure it is

I had tubes put in when I had my adnoids taken out...I was 3
They put you out and poke a hole in your eardrum and put the tubes in
The tubes help to drain the fluid build-up
you will need to take care when showering/swimming so water does not get into the ear thru the tubes
The tubes will fall out in 6-12 months
Hearing will get better, but sometimes you may have some hearing loss (I've always had hearing issues, but I always had ear infections)

Sorry I don't remember much, but getting ear tubes are generally a pediatric surgery.
You might get some cool pain meds.

Well I just got a tube put in my left hear on the 14th. I've been to three doctors (two ENT's) had had a infection since the beginning of the year. I'm going back in tomorrow because of some pain, hearing ringing, actually all the reasons.

The procedure was nothing to be honest. And I don't do needles or talk about medical things very well. And I mean not very well in as I tend to feel like I'm going to pass out.

    Good luck though.
