i had the day off work today and decided to catch a matinée of super 8.

i've gotta say i had high expectations going in, and luckily it did not disappoint. this film reminded me why i love movies; the setting is believable, the acting is surprisingly strong and the plot's encompassing. there's action, drama, comedy and some young romance, and each element weaves together nicely throughout. right now i have to agree with most critics: super 8 is the must-see movie of the summer (so far).

    and it's not a "blockbuster"
    it's not sequal
    it's not a prequel
    it's not a comic book
    could it be.....maybe...original?

it's an original homage, if that's a thing.

ET meets Close encounters with one or two references to Goonies, Stand by me and a couple others.

    Meh...

The Abrahms influence was, IMO, the downside to the movie. The monster was very unoriginal. There was also not that magic that comes with an ILM pick.

Definately not something I'll see again while I could see Close encounters again easily.

So saw this last night. Overall i enjoyed it a lot. However there were a few things I didn't care for. Most notably the train scene. Too over productive and I'm sorry but if a truck goes on a train track to try and stop it I don't think the train would get derailed, Wouldn't the train just smash into the truck. Also when the debris is flying everywhere, I know the kids wouldn't get hit, but the car didn't have a scratch on it as well? What are the odds of that. Also some of the kids dialect I thought were pretty weak. I did enjoy Elle Fanning and the two other main kids.

Anyone notice the Lost reference at the end?
