SCHUYLKILL VALLEY, Pa. -- A military sash kept two Schuylkill Valley Seniors from taking part in graduation.

The school stuck to its guns, even though the students said they only wanted to honor the Army.

Joel Hunsicker and Jordan Marker go through regular physical training every Thursday since they enlisted in the US Army.

"I'm willing to sacrifice my body, my mind, my soul and my life to make sure that people can have a better life," Marker said.

The young men wanted to demonstrate their commitment by wearing US Army sashes or stoles during commencement from Schuylkill Valley High School.

"We get our army stoles on we're just about to go out and the one teacher said you got to leave that here you can't wear them. I said what do you mean we can't wear them," said Marker.

"We won't wear them and we'll go sit with our parents and honor our fellow students by supporting them by sitting there and watching them," Hunsicker added.

"It was tough because I really wanted to take part in it," Marker said.

The superintendent didn't want to go on camera, but he said this wasn't a statement against the military. It's the school's policy to focus on academic achievement.

"It's not getting in the way of anything. It's just saying this is what I'm doing, this is what my future plans are," Hunsicker said.

"I really hope that they respect my decision. They respect the way I acted. And they know I did what I did because I felt it was right," Marker added.

The graduates said they hope what they did will pave the way for future graduates to be allowed to wear military stoles.

All schools and organizations have policies and this was outside what was allowed. Be it US Army satchels or gay-pride rainbow cupcakes sales, why do people raise a stink about things like this when it goes against regulations?

It's always the same story like, "Hey man, I got this great "insert cause" that I'm supporting and The Man said I couldn't do it. All we trying to do is support "insert cause" and they shut us down!" Then the story cuts to the nervous head administrator fending off Fox News and Huffington Post bloggers for just administrating policy.

These stories hardly ever involve a pretext such as, "We met with officials a month in advance to discuss our plans and ...".

i actually think that the saddest part of this was this young 17 year old kid saying he is prepared to give his mind, his body and his life

what does he know? he's 17!

and that's exactly why 17 year olds are recruited

i wonder if he might not feel differently about that after he's seen some action

    what he said

If they want to put the sashes on after the ceremony and take pictures and whatever (like they apparently did), they are more than welcome to. I can't fault the school for trying to keep outside causes out of the graduation ceremony.

This will get the same stupid attention that the "I can't put my big flag pole up with my American flag, even though I agreed to the HOA rules..." guy did on right wing media.

I don't see the big deal either, these students have prerared them selfs for a career and sounds like they may have been part of the R.O.T.C that most high schools and colleges offer, reguardless of their age and what some think about the military this is their choice and the schools support this by offering the R.O.T.C to it's students so I don't understand the problem with the military sashes.

But what do you allow and not allow? Can a football player wear a sash with they number and mascot on it, a chess club member wear one with chess pieces on it, a member of the lesbian/gay club wear a rainbow sash?

yes I understand your point but in my opinion if the kid got an offer from a pro football team right out of school or a scolarship for college I wouldn't see the problem, football and military are a much different deal than a gay and lesbian/chess club group and my thinking on that is football and military offer career opertunity's and there is no eduction programs to advance in gay or lesbian/chess club living,if a gay or lesbian/chess club student prerared for life in the military or football then thay should be able to wear their sash for what ever their career choice is that they used high school to prepare for.
but I also understand the school rules,if those rules are clear in the student hand book there should be no argument from the students or parents.

If these guys have a problem with following arbitrary rules without question (especially ones about what you are allowed to wear), then maybe they shouldn't have joined the army.

Logic. Don't you just love it?
What if they want to wear their sashes on patrol in the Korengal Valley, Afghanistan? Do people who say it's up to them to decide still agree?

Would you let PoD wear his gay porn production sash if he used HS to prepare for that career choice? I doubt it. I'm glad you understand (but don't make) the rules ;)...

to me that is the problem with patriotism. it encourages idealism like this and squelches any actual critical thinking about the commitment these kids are making.

i love everybody, but i am not stopping a bullet for anyone....
