I have an 60gb ipod with lots of music on it.. the PC that I used is now in a cupboard and I have a new laptop with a different iTunes on it. I want to start syncing my ipod with the new itunes and upload new stuff to it but if I do that it will wipe the ipod of whats on there now (like 40gb worth). Is there anyway I can do this? I am a complete technophobe to be honest so any help would be most interested.
Thanks in advance...

Thanks!
go on the new pc, do this...
Step 1.
In iTunes, choose Edit > Preferences.
Click Devices.
Select “Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically.”
If this checkbox is selected, any connected iPod, iPhone, or iPad won’t sync automatically, even if “Automatically sync” is selected in the Summary pane.
Step 2.
then create a folder in your documents or music or somewhere convenient that you'll remember and name it something like ipodBackup.
Double click on the folder to open it, then at the top of that window click on the "Tools" menu, look for folder options. go to the "View" tab, in the Advanced Settings window, scroll down to where it says "Hidden Files and Folders", make sure the "show hidden files and folders" option is selected.
Then click the button that says "apply to all folders", then click ok.
(This is on Windows XP by the way, if you have a different version of windows and things are in different places, just google "view hidden files windows"
Step 3
connect your ipod, wait a few seconds for the pc to recognize it then go to my computer and look for your ipod to be listed. if you see it, double click to open it.
copy the whole thing and paste it into the new folder that you created in Step 2. all of your music is in these folders, but itunes has named them cryptically... however all of the tags are preserved so you'll be fine.
Step 4
In itunes, go to the File menu and select add folder to library. choose the folder that you created.
itunes will then populate the new library with the contents of that folder. If you have any purchased itunes music with DRM, then you'll need to authorize the new itunes with your old account # for those songs to work.
Step 5
If everything else worked, you can now manually sync your ipod... it will erase everything, but then it will put it all back with the newly created library.
Hope this helps.

I followed your very clear and helpful instructions (thank you). As you say I had to google about the hidden files, and found this page as I have vista www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial130.html I then copied my ipod to the file I created in my music and that took about an hour to do so I am sure that the files have copied (otherwise why would it take so long!?). Unfortunately when I go to Edit/add folder to library in iTunes it won't do it. I have checked the file and the properties state there is a lot of gig in there (about 25 which is about right) but when you open the individual files there appears to be nothing there.
Any ideas?
Is there any more info that you can give me?

In the folder that you created (the one where you copied all of your stuff), go through the steps to view hidden files again. Then, if the main folder that you copied over from your iPod appears, right-click on it and choose properties.
Under "Attributes, clear the check box where it says "hidden". Then it should give you the option to apply to all subfolders and files.
All of these files should now become "unhidden" allowing iTunes to see them when you try to import.

In the folder there are 5 folders: Calendars, Contacts, iPod Control, Notes and Photos. The iPod control file is not as colourful (excuse the non tech talk) as the others which means I think it was originally hidden. Within that folder there are four more folders: Artwork, Device, itunes and music. They are all the same reduced colour. When I look in these folders via the usual route I can see the files. When I do it via iTunes, when trying to import them, the answer is "no items match your search".. hence it not importing them, I assume.
So. It appears iTunes can still not read them.. any thoughts?
(thanks so much for your help by the way )
I realised that the hidden box was still checked when I opened the wondow via the "import folder" route on iTunes. Despite doing it via the control panel, as the webiste suggested, it hadn't worked. So I did it and it worked!!!
Thanks so much, awesomeness.

Of course... will do
Thanks again!!
and i assume by doing this that when i try to add new stuff to my ipod in the futere it will still remember the original file location, because all my stuff in on my external hdd, and i usually plug that into my laptop when updating.
but what i want to know now is.. once i have my ipod synced again, can i delete the folder that i created to copy my ipod onto originally, as it takes up 100gb. because when i usually do my itunes my files for my music are on my external hdd, so when i go to add more music to my ipod, will the files already added still know that they originally are located from there.. if you get what i mean.
its okay, i've sussed what i'm going to do, i've looked and looked, and your right that that is now the folder that itunes reads from, so i can't delete it, and i can't find a way to change the path of where itunes regognizes it, but on my pc a friend is overdue to install a secondary harddrive into my pc, so when he does that, i'm going to do all these steps again( i know it a pain, but wasn't that bad really) but this time create the folder onto the secondary hdd, and then delete the other one.
Good plan... hope it goes as smoothly
