if you have VLC player then you can play mkv files on your computer. VLC plays most types of media file so it's really handy and easy to use
i use that to play them, didn't get a converter because of the hassle but it'd just be googling it i suppose

Thanks, but I was hoping to play the file on my divx player, so that I can watch it on my TV. I googled it, but the majority seem to be just free trials.

VLC actually has an option to convert video files. I've never tried it myself, but it might work for the OP.

I downloaded the VLC, but I can't figure out how to make the file to an avi. Any suggestions on how to do it?

Try pressing the button that looks like a piece of paper with a sun in the top right corner. Pick AVI in the encapsulation area, in video codec change it to DIVX 1, and for Audio Codec leave it or switch it to MP3. Haven't tried it myself, but it should work.

AutoGK is my favorite free app. http://www.autogk.me.uk/

Just download the AutoGK full package - Mirror 1 - 5876577

That's all you need. It's pretty simple. :)
