Why So Many Country Music Awards Shows?

Just this past year I noticed it seemed to be that year round they were advertising for one show or another. Why do they have so many awards shows for one genre? So far we have:

The Academy of Country Music Awards (The ACM's)
The Country Music Association Awards (The CMA's)
The CMT Music Awards (The CMT's)
The American Country Awards (ACA's)

That is four different awards shows that I know of, for one single genre of music. And that's not including things like the Canadian Country Music Association Awards, or music awards shows that include all genre's. Why does country music feel the need to constantly pat itself on the back?

Oh, and a follow up question. Why is Kid Rock at ALL of them?

Country music has the most fans of any other kind of music in the U.S. I know it may be surprising especially since I live in the North East where everyone listens to Rap and Hip hop but the majority of people around the U.S. listen to country music. I think I saw somewhere that when someone commits suicide that country music is most likely playing in the background.

Probably because they know the fans of Country Music have the attention spans (and intelligence) of infants! They have to keep it fresh in their minds because otherwise people will forget who's who and what's what in Country Music. My sister and her husband listen to Country Music exclusively and they only know what's on the radio, and what these award shows tell them. They're lucky if they know the artists name or the rest of their albums. They only know the singles, videos and radio hits. I'm my opinion, being that type of music fan is like living in hell! I try to expand my sister's music interest by putting good stuff on her iPod when she's not looking, hoping she'll try something new, but she always goes back to Country. Much like Rap music, Country music defines the lifestyle of it's listeners, telling them who to be and how to act. Therein proving that their listeners are mindless sheep, only there to be manipulated and these genres of music use that to their financial benefit. It's a whole conspiracy theory I have... I could go on, but I'm starting to bore even myself. HA! Either way, Country music sucks!

I don't think what you guys are talking about is actually country music..

Modern country music is nothing but Hollywood sanitized. These award shows help sell records and mp3 downloads, because they put a pretty face to the name and to the song. If you just hear it on the radio, it's the same fucking song over and over again.

I see that KM43590 said basically the same thing. Oops. Well, I agree.

Well, that's a matter of opinion I guess. I know people that look at "Country Music" today, with its Taylor Swifts and whoever the hell else, and say it's not "Real" country. But these are the people who are being honored and given awards by the Country Music Association and Academy Of Country Music, etc.

There were people back in the 90's who felt the same way about the likes of Garth Brooks and Shania Twain, and before that probably felt the same way about the Dolly Partons and Kenny Rogers of the world. There are people who think that old-timey country is the only real country music. But there are those that think the same way about rock music. People that grew up with Hendrix, The Stones, etc. who think that everything that comes out today isn't real rock music. But for better or worse it is rock music, or what it has become. Same with country.

That's probably a whole different thread full of discussion. "What is this SHIT they call Country Music These Days?" is what I would probably call it. I'm not really a fan of any country music, but I don't see how some of this stuff is classified. Nothing about Taylor Swift sounds like Country music to me. Just sounds like regular old bubble gum pop to my ears. But the powers that be in the industry, as well as her piers in the country music world give her the awards, so I guess it is what country has become.

Basing an opinion of country music based on the mainstream is a lot like basing your opinion of rock music based on Nickleback...

PS, Brad Paisley and Keith Urban... Both amazing guitarists.

My opinion of country music is just based on my dislike for it I have had my whole life, from old-timey country music, to alternative-country, to the mainstream. But as I said, the thread wasn't meant to be a critique of country music as a whole, I was just wondering why they had so many awards shows. And I was just talking about what Dewie said about that not being "real country music". I know plenty that would agree, including myself, even though I don't like the so-called "real country music" either. But what is real and what isn't is just a matter of opinion.

My personal dislike of country music doesn't come from any one single act, or style of country music. While I might have more respect for the likes of Hank Williams and Merle Haggard, they are just as absent on my iTunes as Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood. My opinion of Country Music hasn't really changed with the rise of those latter artists, I just have a hard time understanding how somebody like Mrs. Swift even gets classified as Country. As much as I dislike Nickelback, they are technically a rock band.

And I didn't mean that these people have no talent. I dislike a lot of artists that I can grudgingly admit are talented. Celine Dion is a good example. She is an amazingly talented vocalist, I just don't care for the style of music she sings. There are some talented people in the country music world, I just don't like listening to the style of music they have chosen to put their talents to work at.

That's cool! My love for country is more on the alt side (Wilco, Whiskeytown, Ryan Adams, Kathleen Edwards etc..), but I understand those who don't dig it.

Yeah, I have a healthy respect for alt-country bands, I just don't like the sound. I like them in theory though. About the only "country" you'll find me listening to is the few forays that people like The Beatles and Stones did. "I've Just Seen A Face" for example. Although with the Stones it almost seems like they're mocking it rather than being influenced by it. I don't know if that was their intention, but that "country voice" Mick uses is pretty cartoonish, it cracks me up. And the lyrics are often pretty funny, like in "Girl With The Far Away Eyes".

its a shame what country music has become....the awards shows with all these rock stars and rappers showing up...country stars wearing neon suits and lazer lights going everywhere....its ridiculous ...i grew up in 80s and country was simple back then...singers like Marty Robbins,Willie and Waylon,Johnny Cash, George Strait, many many others...was pure country music....country music radio is unbearable these days...and Kid Rock is hosting the next awards show...he just hosted last year...and Taylor Swift...gosh dont get me started..if there was ever an overrated ridiculous performer undeserving of a single award it is her

If someone forced me to pick my favorite genre of music, I would choose country. (Afterall, I am from Hank Williams' hometown.) However, the industry in Nashville, has allowed over the last twenty years, for country music to become pop-centered. It's a true shame. I have so much respect and admiration for Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Mary Robbins, and the other legendary giants. Rock music was created from blues and country music in rural Mississippi and way, way too many people forget this fact.

There are a few newer generation country artists who I like such as Jamey Johnson, Eric Church, and Ashton Shepherd but these artists will never get the attention they deserve because of the record labels catering to the pre-teen female audience who loves the sugar-pop crap that we see with bands like Rascal Flatts, Sugarland, The Band Perry, and Taylor Swift. It's ALL about selling records and nothing else.

Taylor Swift is from my neighborhood, went to school where my sons go. We live near Reading, Pennsylvania, about 70 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Not exactly a mecca of country music at all.

I have nothing against Country music, but I agree that what I have heard on the radio sounds like pop music just done in a country style. I am not a fan, but I can appreciate the old school types like Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson.

I was wondering this myself a few weeks back when I saw another commercial for yet another awards show. I think this is country music's way of promoting their top sellers to the masses. I have no problem with country, just not my cup of tea, but they are becoming more and more pop stars as of late.

As far as Kid Rock goes... he's just a whore going after every dollar he can get his grubby hands on. I have no problem with people making as much money as they can, but this guy is ridiculous, sad thing is people buy into it. He's the P Diddy of music with out the boundaries of a genre... does nothing for me except make me cringe when I hear one of his songs.

Why would anyone question Carrie Underwood having a lot of opportunities to be shown on TV.

Your remote has a mute button, doesn't it? Well use it and enjoy.

it is and we all have nobody to thank for that but garth brooks and shania twain for making country pop. country is alot rock these days you have to dig a little for good artist.

zac brown band is an amazing band. love them alot. they are in my top 3 fave bands with pj and mmj being 1 and 2. they are a mix of everything but still have that country in them and put out really great music. live their live album called pass the jar. they even covered black a few years ago. darius rucker is a throwback to country of old. dirks bently is great artist i'm just starting to dig. keith urban writes really good music and isn't no slouch on guitar. those artist are really the only country i like.
