“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”
you have got to be kidding me. that kid to the left looks like a 17 year old from some disney boy band.
that's the new drummer. I think he is 19. Maybe 20 now
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”
Did you know their new bass player (the female) was actually one of the girls form the cover of Siamese Dream? Talk about full circle.
That was a publicity stunt (which didn't get that much) that was proven to be impossible. The age didn't add up at all. But hey we're talking about it now so I guess it worked to a degree.
I've never been THAT big of a Pumpkins fan, I owned Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness, but EVERYBODY had those albums back then. I saw them live once, but it wasn't because I wanted to go see them, they were one of three bands (the other two were Dave Matthews Band and Matchbox Twenty) opening for The Rolling Stones.
So lineup changes don't bother me too much. Maybe they shouldn't be called Smashing Pumpkins anymore, but I'm not going to discount the music just because those other three people, who I couldn't even name, aren't there.
And if that kid is a good drummer, his age shouldn't be a problem. I don't think it's any worse than Eddie Van Halen's son becoming the bass player for Van Halen. And he doesn't look like boy band material to me, he's kind of husky. Having said that, I don't know if I'm going to check out the new album. I haven't heard a single thing they've done since Mellon Collie. I might listen to it out of curiosity though.
It is an odd looking band though, I'll give you that. It looks like a young Will Sasso, Sorority Girl, young Woody Allen, and Billy Corgan in a baby sun hat.

you're right. both are terrible.
I was a big fan of the Pumpkins in the day. This is not the Smashing Pumpkins.
The kid is actually a hell of a drummer and all the power to him.
Just wish BC would retire the Pumpkin name

I find it funny that even after multiple new members, Billy still managed to get female bassists. As if that makes it the same was it was before. Why not only have Asian guitarists?

If you look at the bass player, he doesn't look too far off from that. He's not asian, but looks like he kinda could be a little.
He tried the same thing when he originally replaced D'arcy with Ginger. She was another blonde, female, bass player.
and fyi, Matt Cameron hired himself out to recorded a bunch of music with the Pumpkins in '98.

he did. it was called Zwan. remember that? commercial failure. why? was the cd bad? nope. one of Billy's best. it was because of the marketability. it would have done WAY better under the SP moniker. you want your music heard? use your most marketable name. pretty simple business. he was/is that whole band anyway. if it was Iha using the name, that would be a whole other ball of wax.

Zwan was much closer to Smashing Pumpkins than the current incarnation of Smashing Pumpkins.
Yep, that was probably Corgan's last solid album from top to bottom. Since then he's only had a handful of good songs (out of at least 60-80+ released and played live).
Pumpkins has always been about what Corgan wanted and always will be. He's probably recording the guitar/bass parts again anyway
it's quite different, actually. Billy wrote most if not all of the Pumpkins music. GNR was very much a collaborative effort, with most of their best songs, arguably, being written by Izzy. Although, I didn't care about Axl keeping that name either. It's just a bloody name, after all.

Actually that guitarist is Asian, Korean-American specifically. You can't really tell in that picture, but in some others you can. I'm sure they're capable musicians, I don't think Billy would let them if the band if they weren't, but I do find it mighty suspicious that he just happened to replace the female bass player with another female bass player (and before this one another female bass player), and the Asian guitarist with another Asian guitarist. Who knows, maybe they WERE the best people to audition, but it seems pretty convenient. Like maybe he's hoping casual fans won't know the difference or something.
