It's been a while since something made me rage so much. I mean, I felt absolutely disgusted watching.

I might have mentioned this somewhere else on the forums but ... Recently, a friend of mine was at the Cleveland airport waiting for a connecting flight back to Toronto coming home from Mexico. In his hands he had a hammock. He had already gone through a security check point with it. As he was waiting for his flight, a figure of authority came over to him and asked him what he had in his hands. He told him it was a hammock. The security personnel told my friend that it could be used as a weapon. Naturally, my friend began to laugh but this guy was serious. My friend was asked to check it with his luggage which had already been checked back in Mexico ... lol ... and my friend explained that his flight was leaving within the hour & also mentioned that he didn't appreciate spinning the idea that a hammock can be used for a weapon. Anyway, he ended up checking it after a friend of his reminded him of the brain washing that comes from the top for these security figures & the no fly list.
He just made his flight after checking the hammock and having to run the entire time through the airport.

I just remembered ... Also, after my buddy was done running back to his flight, a friend who was with him had been told (seriously) to stop whistling by another authority figure while waiting for her flight.

I feel another Footloose movie being made, but this time it's about dancing in public places around the world, not a small town in the Mid-West.

We Americans sure love our freedom.
  • OK I was totally shocked too.

Until I read more about this incident and the video that was edited and selectively shot.

This was a flash mob and was specifically meant to incite an arrest. So they could resist and so they could throw a big hissy fit. This was actually staged, apparently, and it was a protest that national memorials are a place for quiet reflection and not disturbing the peace.

There's a time and a place for everything and the Lincoln Memorial isn't a place for slow-dancing. They were politely told to stop and move along and they wouldn't stop. The video starts after the police had exhausted all their kind words and it was their job to remove the people from the space.

And for the record... I'm a fist-in-the-face liberal. And I think flash mobs are just annoying ploys for attention by the losers who think Drew Carey is funny.

Regardless of what anyone thinks of the intention of the dancers, judging by what they were actually doing, wasn't the use of force in this situation way over the top? Did this not happen in a public place and therefore fair game for protest according to the first amendment? Was it not a peaceful demonstration in front of the Jefferson Memorial (ironically, something TJ himself would have supported, or at least supported their RIGHT to do), since they were ONLY DANCING, with earbuds in, and no amplified music?

And as far as the "liberal" or "conservative" angle on this-- Adam Kokesh (the guy who got chokeslammed) ran for the Republican nomination in a New Mexico Congressional race and failed to get the nomination. He is still registered Republican and says so on his TV show. The couple who got arrested were from Code Pink, a group known to be very liberal. This IS the type of coalition that is needed in this country to protect our civil liberties, and the majority of the responses in this thread pretty much amount to, "Free speech and expression-- as long as I agree with it, otherwise the use of overbearing force to remove it is perfectly fine by me."

What would have been the best way to make these people stop dancing?

To leave them alone and let their rabble-rousing be a complete waste of time. They would have packed up and left, and that would have been it. Instead, next weekend they're taking it to the next level:

If you're in the DC area, maybe you'll want to join the Dance Party at TJ's? ;)

I'd go myself but I already bought a ticket for a bigger rock-out and dance party at MOUNTAIN JAM!!! :D

The moment they started resisting arrest, they lost all credibility with me. They just seemed like spoiled little brats that created a situation to incite a confrontation with the police.

Cool that you ran with the Lou Reed quote, Jeanwah! I guess the video manipulation of these events is further proof of that axiom!
