Dave Matthews Band is horrible live

Can't say I dislike all of his songs but live he manages to turn a good song into a 15 minute jam out that puts you to sleep. He should stick to just playing the songs how they are on the albums, maybe one or two songs with a few jams added but he overdoes it.

This video disproves your thread title. When i go to a show, I don't wanna hear it like the album. For that, I'd listen to the album.

Not even his song, and it's 10 minutes long.

I know it's not, and the 10 minute jam is wicked. What's the point of bands playing songs exactly like the album? My least favourite shows (U2, Roger Waters) were shows that I thought 'I could've stayed at home and heard the same thing'.

I agree a 10 minute jam is wicked once in awhile but when it's every song it gets to be too much.

I think it depends on the band to be honest, and as a musician, I like seeing it as long as it's melodic.

For instance, do I want to see Coldplay jam? Probably not. But bands like Furthur, DMB, Black Crowes... Jam away!

I for one think the jams add a lot to the songs, most of them anyway. there are a couple that go on for way too long. bartender, seek up, jimi thing to name a few. I suggest br/beer break

Exactly. People make the same mistake when they go to John Mayer shows.

I saw him perform at Miller Park with Tim Reynolds Oct. 2, 2010

    Setlist:

    1.All Along The Watchtower
    2.Satellite
    3.Don't Drink the Water
    4.Save Me
    5.You & Me
    6.Gravedigger (with Willie Nelson)
    7.Crush

I actually enjoyed most of the set, especially the beginning and the song with Willie. I think Dave would be better as a solo performer.

I 100% disagree. I think much like PJ, they are better live than in studio. And for their big fans, it's a pretty freaking magical experience seeing them. PJ is and always will be my number 1, and although I know I'm in the minority here, DMB are my number 2.

As for the jams you're talking about, yeah they jam- they've been doing that since 91! I find many of their jams to be far from boring. As for 15 minutes long, their whole show is not just one big jam. In a show they'll normally choose 5 or so songs to really jam on; there are plenty of songs that are in the 5-9 minute range. And when they do jam, for the most part, they are just so dynamic! Really talented musicians showcasing their respective skills. For example look up any live performance of Two Step, which usually runs over 15 minutes but is extremely exciting and fun to listen to and watch. Plus can't beat a Carter Beauford Two Step drum solo! The only long jam I really don't care for is when they do a 17 minute Seek Up.

On the other hand, I am a firm believer in 'to each their own', and I could see how one would dislike DMB. But I have seen them live 8 times (seeing them live actually turned me into a fan- went to a show in '09 with my best friend cuz it seemed like fun...the rest was history!) and have thoroughly enjoyed each show!

Ditto. Another awesome song live is #41. Over the years, it's become longer and longer.

i'm not even sure i would call what Dave does jamming. Each band member seems to take an extended solo from time to time with the other band members sustain a similar beat (to the song's structure) around it. When I think of jamming i think of group improv where each band member has a chance to say something with their instrument until they lock in on something and run with it whether it be creating an awesome peak or going into "type 2" uncharted territory. i also agree with what other posters have mentioned about not wanting the songs to sound the same as the album. What's the point? Just listen to the studio album if you want perfection and save yourself $50. I think i'm rambling now, but if you look at my avatar you can tell i take this "jamming" stuff too seriously.

I saw them years ago with my girlfriend and then twice last summer with my cousin and some of his friends and I had a killer time all three times. I'm not that familiar with his music, but his live shows are pretty fun. i'm all for the 15 min jam sessions - that's what makes live shows so much fun. Who the hell wants every song to sound exactly like the album/studio version?
