Blind or Deaf

My girlfriend and I had this discussion last night. Me: deaf. As much as I LOVE music and as big of a part as it plays in my life, I'd still have to choose to lose the hearing. You can still "feel" music somewhat by the thumping of the bass and the motions of the musicians. Tough choice though.......that would really, really suck if I never got to here "Release" ever again.

Your choice?

Helen Keller once said, "I would rather be blind than to be deaf, because being deaf will deprive me of communicating with the world around me."

    I agree.

    Sign language?

Pretty ironic that you say that, posting on an internet forum, communicating with the world around you and in fact.. the whole world.

The internet didn't exist in Helen Keller's day... now, being blind and not being able to see a computer screen is MUCH more of a hindrance to communicating with the world around you.

(And what sucks is that I'm losing my eye sight in one of my eyes... trust me... it sucks.)

I'd never want to lose my eye sight, the world's too beautiful a place to never be able to see again. I already know a little sign language so if I had to choose, I'd rather lose my hearing.

That's true. I guess it would just be difficult to communicate with the people around you. But like someone mentioned, there's always sign language. I suppose that's better than nothing.

Yeah - not being able to see a sunny day at the beach would be devastating. You really have to feel for people who went blind mid-life, but especially who were born blind. Or could it be the other way around......?

I think I'd rather lose my hearing... too much for me to see,

I'm going deaf as it is now - too much loud music. ( but I can still see ) ;)

I have really loud tinitus and hyperacusis and am told that if I were to go deaf I would still hear the ringing but ONLY the ringing. No thanks! I'll keep what tattered hearing I have. But to not be able to see... oh man.

Without a question, I'd rather lose my hearing. Not even close.

Sucks I won't hear music, but I'd never see the world around me and the faces of the ones I love. Traveling blind would be a bitch. You can easily communicate without hearing.

definitely deaf... while there is a lot you'd miss out on, at least you could get around pretty normally. And as pointed out, with technology, it's easier to communicated now than ever before.

As someone who has sight loss in both eyes, and knows a few people with no vision at all, I'd have to say losing eyesight is far favourable to losing your hearing. There's technology now to read stuff on a computer screen out which is reasonably affordable, works well, and makes it so you can miss out on very little online.

Being deaf, on the other hand, and never being able to hear music. No thanks.
