Sad news....

Saw him when I was 20 in Brighton, UK. Never forgotten it. He is up there with some of the greatest live acts I have seen.....

    No way, what a sad day. :( His poetry and song writing was among the best he will be surely missed. My friend Michael Franti used his style and grace in his own writings and poetry.

    I'll have to pull out some of his music for sure.

    I should have seen him when he played a free show in Central Park last summer. Problem was I was feeling sick and it was 95 degrees out.

    Of the many concerts I've seen....he is one I wished I was able to see. I loved his answer to this question that was asked of him.

    Westword: Your music is known for being socially conscious. When and what sparked that awareness inside you?

    Gil Scott-Heron: Don't you just hate socially unconscious people? We run into them every once in a while but we try not to hang out with them. I think everybody has it, some people choke it off and don't use it. I think we all start off with it. We are a social sort of animal, as far as I'm concerned. My songs are just about people. Generally they're folks I know or have heard about.

    A poem someone wrote to Gil Scott-Heron and how he influenced him and his poetic writings....
    “The Pen of Fire” (My Tribute To Gil Scott-Heron)

    Brother Gil-Scott Heron–No–like the rest of the best / he’s not dead /
    not in my my Soul...not in my head..
    yeah he’s the one that said - “ the Revolution Will Not be Televised” /
    now all the analyzers -criticizers- paralyzers- i say-- brutalizers /
    they wanna say his song was wrong / one election as the proof /
    but when I look up it’s not the roof—that’s leaking /
    and I like to dig a little deeper no matter who’s speaking ... considering /
    all the lies we’ve heard / at least from the time I was born / I know their scorn /
    but they cain’t televise our minds / no they cain’t televise / they cain’t televise /

    see I know the laws changed / but the hearts ?—still the same –
    just take a look around/ the whole world is still in flames /
