Classic rock - I think of stuff from the 60 's and 70's. 94.1 WYSP from Philly uses a phrase I like better for the music from the 80's and 90's - they call it:

The Rock you grew up with

You gotta look at it like I do. When I was a kid (early 90's) I considered CCR, Zeppelin, Springsteen, Pink Floyd,
Aerosmith etc all classic rock. In the early 90's these bands had only been around for 20 years or so, give or take. Now we are in 2011. The bands of the early 90's have been around the same amount of time.

My first wake up call to this was when I first heard U2 on classic rock radio. Just the other day I heard the Black Crowes on the same station. Scary.

So I guess we should start a movement to start calling Pearl Jam "Classic Rock" and bands like Zep, Floyd and CCR are now "Ancient Rock" :)

I've found a great new radio station for my car - 'Absolute Radio' (UK) - it's on Medium Wave, so not stereo - but they play ALL the music I like - great guitar based music from 1960s to present day - I don't think they call it 'Classic Rock', they have brit-pop, indie, american alternative, Joni Mitchell, Green Day, you name it - just good music. I've heard Nirvana on there a fair few times, and I thought it was only a matter of time before they played me some PJ - and then this week, was just pulling into a town when - der du du der der de ALIVE came on - I had shivers all down me from the opening. Something special about hearing it unexpectedly!

    Thanks for listening! ;)

We have Absolute Radio on at work. Used to be Virgin Radio up until a couple of years ago. Good stuff. Alive gets played fairly regularly... I'm actually sick of hearing it now!

There's also Absolute Classic Rock on DAB radio, which I put on sometimes... they'll occasionally give Even Flow and Jeremy a spin.
And I planted my bolo knife in the neck of mad John Finn. I took his wretched life.
Now I'm over near the bandstand, every hand moving on John Finn's wife...

I just got a new car with complimentary XM radio for 3 months. I received a call about possibly extending this free trial (for a fee). I mentioned that I was not interested as the ONLY station I have been listening to is Pearl Jam radio.

She replied with, "...well, we have a whole lineup of classic rock stations you may be interested in."

Honestly, they sound straight out of the 70s. For a modern band, they are the closest thing to classic rock on the planet now.

Classic can be taken a variety of ways. It can be taken as meaning old, but it can also be taken as meaning timeless, like it still sounds good as the years go by. That can't be said for every act from the 90's or any era. Classic is what remains after much of the music of a time falls by the wayside. The years can't be stopped for anyone or anything, but quality will be remembered.

    Labels are weird...

I still consider "Classic Rock" as 60's/70's rock...the same as I did 10-20 years ago.
I still consider "Oldies" as 50's music...same as I did 10-20 years ago.
I still consider "Pearl Jam" as "Pearl Jam"...same as I did 10-20 years ago. :)
