EDIT Stone and MIKE.

I hate it, like I try to hear a song, and I want to find out which part is which, and I just suck so much.

does this happen with anyone else? I cant hear 2 guitars sometimes..

Like I basically know, but I need clarification sometime.

I've no bloody clue which of them is playing at what time and I couldn't care less (about not knowing). :D

it's always astounded me how some people can (seemingly) easily tell the difference.

hehe, since you're local to me, come and see No Code (the tribute band from northern NJ)....I play Stone's parts, and Rob (the other guitarist) plays Mike's part....it's as simple as watching us, or standing on one side then going to the next side....we play the parts as accurate as possible (hey...I've had a few lessons from Stone!)

    http://www.myspace.com/nocodejam for more info.

if u can't make it....familiarize yourself with what parts you know they play (like stone playing the intro's to once, alive, black, animal, etc...)...and pan your music to that side...for the most part that side will ALWAYS be stone.

I think the solo and more whammy parts of the songs are Mike. Stone does some too (Like DTE, and others) Stone is the more rythm sounding guitars and intros in the song. Now that Ed Plays guitar sometimes, it's hard to tell what parts are his. (some are noticeable, like Thumbing my way for example).

I can always tell which is Stone and which is Mike.

Me too, though perhaps being a guitarist makes it easier.

If you're listening to the official boots, you'll find Mike is always mixed to your left speaker and Stone to your right.

The studio it's all mixed up however.

Once you know which parts each is playing you'll find it easier for your ear to pick up on it. I'd have no idea how you'd do it if you're not a guitarist though as I've never looked at it from that angle...

I think it's pretty easy to tell to be honest, not trying to come off as a dick or anything, but I think there's a distinct sound between how Mike plays and how Stone plays.

I thought they always recorded with Mike in the left and Stone in the right. Just like it would be if you were in the audience at a show. That's how I've always heard it.

Glorified G was the first time I realized it.

yeah dude, you're not the only one, don't feel bad. but there are definitely some good suggestions here in this thread...

but I've been listening to Camper Van Beethoven - which had 3 guitarists - Jonathan, Greg and David.
There was a distinct different which I couldn't tell but one of their fans could. According to one:-
David who grew up in Spain did everything in E.
Jonathan an American did everything in C.
And Greg from Santa Cruz bend all strings.

But still I'm not sure about Stone and Mike.

I've met Jonathan who said that after a few jars they couldn't get their ACT together!!!

Is this the same with Mike and Stone???

For the live stuff, yeah, but not always the studio stuff. O'Brien often put them on opposite sides. ("Love Reign O'er Me" for example.)

I never have any trouble distinguishing between the 2 when I listen through headphones or my MP3 player. Mike on left, Stone on right.
